Cannot play APLs through Libarary Server
« on: August 12, 2005, 08:42:22 am »

Just setup a media server to avoid having to change tags etc on multiple computers.

However, MC cannot seem to play my APL files created from a cue files using the monkey audio tool.
Is this a bug?

Are you using MC11?

I recall I was able to play APL files with MC10 & Media Server (not sure), but it is not possible in MC11 with the new Library Server. The same is true with CUE tracks.

A workaround is to use the conversion option. You could use e.g Ogg Vorbis at Q10. It's target bitrate is about 500 kbps. However that is sluggish because the disc image APE files are so big. Also, this workaround does not work with CUE tracks for some reason.

You may want to replace the default Vorbis encoder with the "Blacksword's optimized" version. It is listed in this Vorbis encoders download page: http://www.rarewares.org/ogg.html. That would speed up encoding significantly.

Another viable option would be to convert the APL files to separate APE tracks. You could store the disc image files only in your backup archive. There is no functional difference inside MC, except that the single track APE files work with all MC functions properly. MC can play APE files gaplessly if you are afraid of that.

Is this a bug or will it be implemented soon?

Is there a tool where I can break up the APE/Cue file into multiple APEs?

I don't know. It is up to JRiver. I doubt this will change in MC11.0.
I have an idea for the next version, but I have been waiting for the alpha cycle to start.

A very good tool for that is MC. Just select the APL files inside the library and convert them. MC preserves the file tags and can also update the library. I don't think APE files can be split without decoding and re-encoding, but because the formats are lossless there is no danger of quality loss.
