Syncing with Ipod
« on: August 22, 2005, 10:41:45 pm »

I apologize for this basic level post, but I cant find this information anywhere.

I have an Ipod, Itunes and J River Media Center.  I want to ditch ITunes and simply sync my Ipod with playlists defined in Media Center.

How do I do this?  What are the settings?  How do I go about getting Media Center to "see" my Ipod, etc.

Thank you in advance for helping me with this.

Go into itunes, edit->preferences and turn off the checkbox that says "Open iTunes when this ipod is attached"
Close itunes
Start MC (current versions have the iPod plugin built in)
Expand "Drives and Devices"
Your iPod should be found by MC.
Answer "yes" to the question about recognizing the ipod as a portable media player
Choose your sync preferences.
You should be all set as the iPod will now show up under "drives and devices"

Thank you for your help on this.  Alas, Media Center does not see my Ipod, even after changing the ITunes settings.  I tried restarting the Ipod before connecting it, but no luck.

By the way, it is an Ipod Mini, if that makes a difference.

HELP!!!!

Is your iPod recognized in Windows Explorer?

Try going to Tools->Options->Handhelds and click on the 'Reset' button. This will fix the problem if you ever inadvertently told MC to not recognize your iPod.

PS. Are you really a maestro as in conductor? I am a professional tuba player (when not at JRiver) I am trained to be suspicious of people in tails waving sticks  ;)

Solved!

The problem was that by default, the Ipod tries to grab "Z:" as its drive letter in windows, which is also the default drive letter grabbed by many external NAS drives (mine is Maxtor).

The solution was to first disable the NAS drive and log into windows, which allows the Ipod to be visible.  Next go to "Computer Management" and change the drive letter for the Ipod.  Then re-enable the hard drive, reboot and everything works.
