iPod Skipping Playback files
« on: April 05, 2005, 10:17:02 am »

Hello All,

There are a couple of threads floating around on this and I want to correct it once and for all. IN the current version of MC, if you transfer a file with foreign characters in the filename (not the 'name') they should be automaically changed to a '_' character which should enable the file to be played by iPod. In regards to filename length, I am unable to duplicate the skip with filenames that are over 50 characters. If anyone has a skipping file, please email me at steve @ jriver.com with it and include in the email what version of iPod you have and what Operating System you are working on. I will try to nail this down once and for all this week.

Steve,

Very pleased you've found time to look at this one. If by "current" you mean build 231 then I'm afraid that the skipping is as bad as ever.

A sample file is on its way to you for checking.

Good luck!

John.

I narrowed my problem down to the filename length being more than 40 characters (31 is what iTunes chops it to).  I'm using the new 60Gb Photo.  The about screen on iPOD says:
Version =1.0
Model = P9830B
Format = Windows

I feel sure that this must be a feature of the newer iPODs otherwise people would have been screaming about it for ages.  The fact that iTunes chops the filename down to 31 characters was the give away for me.

risingdamp,

Thanks for the info.  Tonight I added a feature to truncate long filenames which should solve this once and for all.

Thanks.

Steve,

Tried build 233 this morning - initialized Ipod photo and synched my Test playlist - sadly all the tracks with long files names still skipped.

Sorry about the bad news!

John and I0th,

Please give an example of a skipping  filename  on the iPod as viewed in explorer.

Thanks,

here's one that doesn't seem to be either too long or to have any unusual characters:

01 - Olio.mp3

So the problem seems to be actually worse than before

I am having this problem as well on the .235 version of MC.  I have an IPOD Photo 60.   I have confirmed I am having the same problem as risingdamp with the long file names.

I removed the long file names from my ipod and then synched the IPOD and the files show up again with the same long names and will not play on the IPOD.

Do you still need some examples?  I saw others here already that are like mine, but I can give more.

I'm a bit of a wimp I'm afraid when it comes to upgrading to a new build since I have a whole house system which centres on my HTPC. It's not good for WAF if I install a buggy build so I always wait a few days before upgrading.  Have you identified the issue here Steve? Is it really still broken with 235 or should I upgrade?

Hi,

I've been using MC10 for a few months now and love it.  Definately better than iTunes, but like many users I've seen complain here, I've had LOTS of tracks skipping on the iPOD.

I've just upgraded to MC11 .235 and re-synced and it looks like the problem has disappeared.  I've scanned through (listened) more than 200 songs and not one problem.  Normally I'd have at least 1 in 10 songs skip.  I searched for most of the songs I have with long file names and non US ASCII characters and they all played without problems.  Many thanks.

Now if only you could get that replay gain working properly on the iPOD  :)

Keep up the excellent work.

Replay Gain works, but not perfectly. The change to make it more accurate is doable, not too hard and will be done.

Everyone, I have yet to see an instance of track skipping in 235 or higher when the skipping tracks are removed from iPod and resent.

Yes, after listening to quite a few songs today it seems that the long filename issue is now solved with 236. Please don't touch it!  ;D

Thank you Steve, I just tried the latest 240 driver and it works again!  Also other strange things with the analyzing and ejecting my iPod seem to work much better.

Thanks again, -Dons   ;D

I now have the problem of file skipping playback with build 309...The files transfer okay, but when playing them back on my ipod (3G) most of them skip. (the title is visible for about 2 seconds, then the ipod skips to the next song, this process repeats until eventually a song starts playing).

Any ideas?

Check the filepaths that MC is reporting for the files on iPod that are skipping. Browse on the iPod using Explorer and see if the files are actually there. My guess is, they are not. Isolate those files and try transfering them. If they are not transfering, check the MC path and make sure they are not network paths.
