Many GPFs when ripping
« on: September 27, 2002, 02:22:26 pm »

Help!  I am starting to dislike the color blue (as in Windows blue screen of death!).    :(

It's all too easy to reproduce, but isn't predictable.  When I try to copy CDs to my hard drive in almost any format (wma or MP3) or size, I get a blue screen.  A warm boot doesn't work, only a shut-down seems to help, and only sometimes.

When it does work, I do as many CDs as possible, no matter how late it is.  However, I can also spend all evening just trying to get a single song.  I've tried it with single songs, full CDs, and everything in between.

My system info is below.  I love this program other than this issue, and SteveG has spent many hours getting my handheld to work, so the support is awesome. Can anyone out there help?

Many thanks,
Monica

Which model cd drive do you have?
A couple of things come to mind:
1. look for an updated driver for your cd drive.
2. update the aspi layer

Hi John,

Thanks so much for the reply.  I'll check for an updated driver for my CD writer.  Meanwhile, I'll poke around on this list to see if I can find tips on updating my aspi layer.  If I can't find it, I may bug you again.  ;D
Thanks,
monica

I often get these errors when I'm using MJ to convert WAVs to OGG or MPC.

(I know I don't have the most recent version of MJ, I was on vacation, I'll update it and see if I still get the errors).

Figured out the ASPI layer update, if anyone else is interested.  I installed it and will play around with MJ tonight.

I get the "winoldap" error after ripping a few songs. Ususally when ripping a cd the first 3 or 4 songs go well, then there's an error message usually followed by the blue screen. Not a problem with other rippers or even MJ v7.

Good news.  I updated my ASPI layer, as John suggested (see previous link).  I've ripped 12 CDs over the last week, with NO blue screen or even a stray GPF.  I've not saying that would help everyone's problems, but it doesn't sound like it would hurt.

BTW, here is a collection of things I discovered about WINOLDAP:

Winoldap is a part of the file winoa386.mod file generally located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. Winoldap is a Non-Windows application component for 386 enhanced mode.

Cause:
Winoldap and/or Winoa386.mod errors can be caused by any of the following:

Incorrect drivers
System agent

If you are encountering a issue related to Winoldap or Winoa386.mod that are not listed above attempt to try the following recommendations.

Verify no conflicts or errors are present in device manager. In addition ensure that no Other devices are listed.
Close all TSR's and open programs on the computer and see if issue persists. If issue does not persist it is likely a application is running in the background causing this issue.
Verify that the latest drivers have been installed for your video card and sound card.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Plus! version 1.0 for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
More Information
You may also receive this error message when you try to install a program, even if you have not installed Microsoft Plus!. If you receive this error message and you do not have Microsoft Plus! installed, check to make sure that the correct monitor type is selected in Display properties.
-----
In a Windows system, the MS-DOS prompt runs within its own virtual machine (VM), which is separate from the system VM in which the visible window runs. This visible window is embodied in Winoldap.exe, which is a 32-bit Windows-based program with some specialised features that allow it to manage the interface for MS-DOS-based programs (such as the command prompt).

It is evident from your problem description that either the winoldap file has got corrupted or that the program is not able to communicate with the system VM. This requires a reinstallation of Windows but another way around the problem would be to manually copy a fresh version of the winoldap file from another computer. However, if the problem persists, then the only solution is reinstallation of Windows.

----
FYI - I don't know if Win2K or XP use it.  It's definitely in Win95 and 98 (which I'm running).

Hope that helps.
