How can I change the viewer options?

Specifically, can I open a photo in a window instead of full screen when I double click it? I notice that after it opens full screen, I can click the icon in lower right corner to make it windowed, but as soon as I close it an open another, it''s back to full screen. Also, being able to change the background color of the viewer would be nice, but I don't think that option is available.
