Was wondering the same thing...and how about compilations/soundtracks made by the same artist?
Braveheart soundtrack for example...it's a soundtrack therefor a form of compilation, but only one artist/orchestra. Do you use the same formula for that as for Reservoir Dogs soundtrack? Or?

I use

Artist = actual artist who performed the song

Album Artist = "Various Artists"

That way I find all my compilation CDs listed under "Various Artists" in the tree, but they still show up when searching for a particular artist etc.

This is the way I've been storing and sorting my CD's for years. Why change now?

For soundtracks I use the following filename format:

CD Title - Track No - Artist - Song Title
(ie: Blade Runner - 04 - Vangelis - Rachel's Song.ogg)

and then tag the song(s) with the appropriate info.

Then when you go to Media Library>Albums, Blade Runner shows up there.

You could replace the CD Title w/ your Compilation title.

Hm...sounds quite good...but how do you do with for instance:
DJ Tiesto - Magik 3 -  The Dubs - Lost Without You (Dominion mix)
Here you have an Artist releasing the compilation, an artist performing, album name and title...this is getting somewhat confusing :)

Then we have at least these types of albums:
1. Artist - Album - Title
2. Compilation - Album Artist - Title
3. Soundtrack - Album Artist - Title
4. Artist - Soundtrack - Title
5. Artist - Compilation - Album Artist - Title

Any more combinations? The reason I separated Compilation and Soundtrack is that you probably want to know if it's a soundtrack or not... personally I use to address a soundtrack with "Soundtrack - Bladerunner" instead of just naming the album "Bladerunner"...

I put Soundtrack in the genre tag. Eliminates redundancy and keeps file name shorter. Plus MJ is able to search in all tag info anyway.

My scheme uses just the basic tags. Of course, if I create a compilation called "Groovy Tunes", then that would replace "So Tonight That I Might See" in CD Title tag and the track # would change to it's order in the compilation.

so....
Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See - 09 - Into Dust.ogg

would become.....
Groovy Tunes - 01 - Mazzy Star - Into Dust.ogg

I wouldn't actually change the filename - just the tag info.

If you create a playlist then you wouldn't have to change anything. Original info stays intact.

how about...

each track: artist tag = actual track artist
each track: album artist tag = Various Artists (xxxxxx)

xxxx = the name of the compilation

Create a media view grouped by "Album Artist" and then "Album" with a filter of "AlbumArtist=Various"

... works for me  ;)
