I have searched the FAQ and forum for an answer to my query but have failed to find the information.

Is the "Restore" year a calender year or based on the aniversary of purchasing MC11? If the latter, I was expecting my restores to be reset last month. I have experienced several problems with my PC and now have only 3 restores left. When can I expect them to be reset to the max?

Please clarify.

Same here.   Upgrade purchased 23/9/04, reinstalled MC on 31/10/05 and the email I received said:

We notice that you have just used a restore for Media Center 11.
This product has a limit of 10 restores per year, and you now have 5 restores remaining.

When can I expect them to be reset to the max?

A year after you used a Restore last time.

The number of the available Restores increases by one a year after the day when a Restore was used. They come back one by one. There is no yearly Restore reset day.

When testing stability on a new system MC can be first used in the trial mode. After using a Restore the same key file is valid for 14 days.

If I had done the following restores for example:
Sept 2004 -> 9 Left
Dec 2004   -> 8 Left
Jan 2005   -> 7 Left

They'd then come back
Sept 2005  -> 8 Left
Dec 2005   -> 9 Left

Has that changed?   I thought when the restores business was initially implemented it was mentioned that it would automatically reset.

No, the restore system has not changed since MJ8 was introduced.

Here's how Gateley explained it once:

From the FAQ:

Q: How many restores do I have left?
A: Go to the restore page and click on the 'e-mail' button to receive a list of your registration codes by e-mail. This e-mail also tells how many restores are available.  You have ten free restores each year and there is no limit on the number of years.


You would not have received a password, it was one you entered when you purchased MC10. If you don't remember it, I'll e-mail it to you.

The year period is not from a certain day to a certain day, it is 1 year from the moment you try to restore. There's no magic moment when all your restores come back, each restore you use becomes available again one year after you actually use it.

The restore was set up to discourage users from passing out unlimited copies of MC.

J River has in my experience always been very helpful with giving extra restores or resetting them for users that are having legitimate computer problems. If you are having problems, communicate with the J River folks and I'm sure they'll help you out.

As Alex said the restore key is good for 14 days, so when you use a restore save it to a file outside of MC, so you can reuse during that 14 days and not have to use another restore.

I think I understand the process now. Just have to hope that the Bill Gatesware starts behaving itself for next 12 months.
