When including smartlists into a new super-smartlist, why does MC ignore the sort order of the sub-smartlists?

I have two smartlists, each with their own sort order and I want to combine (concatenate) them into one smartlist, but preserve the sort order of each smartlist.  Unfortunately MC jumbles both lists together.

Any way to achieve this?

This has to do with how the internals work.  Smartlists run file-by-file instead of gathering all the files from each token and merging them at the end.  This helps performance and makes super-smartlists that include the same file in each sub-smartlist more logical.

I wonder if there's an end around to accomplish the same thing, like building a temporary playlist (that supports order and duplicates) or similar?

Are you suggesting manually creating such a list?  I can see no way to automate this approach?
