can't be renamed
« on: September 20, 2005, 07:59:02 am »

I have serveral files wich can't be renamed. If I look into "Tag Info" via Actionwindow it shows <can't be renamed> as filename. I don't know why. They are not write protected and I don't find anything they are all equal with each other... they are all mp3...

This is one of the files:

MPEG-1 Layer 3
224 Kbit CBR
44.1 Khz Stereo

Copyrighted: No
Original: No
Protected by CRC: No

ID3v1 Tag: (128 bytes)
   Name:
   Artist:
   Album:
   Year:
   Comment:
   Track #: 0
   Genre: Dance (3)

ID3v2 Tag: (3958 bytes)
   MCDI: <unknown data type>
  TLEN (Length): 226666
  USLT (Unsynchronized lyric/t..): <too large to display>
  TPE1 (Lead performer(s)/Solo..): Kate Ryan
TBPM (BPM (beats per minute)): 139
  TIT2 (Title/songname/content..):
  TCON (Content type): Dance
  COMM (Comments):
  COMM (Tool Name): Media Center
  COMM (Tool Version): 11.0.303
  COMM (Replay Gain): -15,24577
  COMM (Custom 1): Dream Dance
  COMM (Peak Level): 1
  COMM (Intensity): 5

I first thought, it has something to do with "MCDI: <unknown data type>" but other files with the same are able to get renamed...

Any Idea?

Is there nobody out there, who can help? Or even has the same problem? Using 11.1.54 and I still have the same problem.
I want to rename all the files of a library, but there are few (or many!?) files wich can't be renamed and I don't know how to filter them and even don't know why they can't be renamed.

Look at the "Filename" column for these files.  I'm guessing they're from a CD you inserted at some point.

it also could be file is in use

sometimes audio programs i have found once it plays the file even if you push stop the program still keeps the file in a open state. this then will prevent you from renaming this file.

@King: They never can be renamed. Even a restart of my PC and a clean MC start at the very beginning doesn't allow me to rename them.

@Matt: I copied the files from a mp3-CD to a local Folder. And they can't be renamed in my local folder. Some of those files I can rename, others not. Don't see any reason...

Also coping files to another location an re-import same doesn't have an effect.

Question to JRiver: What should be the reasons for <can't be renamed> being displayed as the filename in action window?

because you copied them from a cd to your hard drive, the files are most likely "read only"

You need to browse to them using explorer, not MC, select the files, right click, choose properties. I would expect you to see a tick in the read only box. remove that, press OK and your problems should go away.

[...] They are not write protected [...]

First thing I thought about, I so maked sure that no one of the files is write protectet. And I also have the (WindowsXP-)rights to write to them.

If I could match all this files in MC or anywhere else, I would rename all other files and leave the "unrenameable" as they are, but I don't know, how I can get a list of this files, so I have to bother you  :-\

BTW: I'm able rename them in explorer (and other programms) without getting any message...

so maybe it is something to do with the path and or the file name MC does not like.

sounds weird to me and never heard of it if it is not the "Copied From CD" or "File Busy" problems.
