Can we get the formatdate( ) expression to format the date field into seconds and/or minutes?  I'm trying to write some expressions which work on the [last played] field but the granularity of formatdate( ) is working against me.

Count me in, too. When formating with formatdate([date modified],elapsed) for example in "Customize current view" when adding a column like this I end up with 3 types of formatting . The time shown in hh:mm:ss and xx.x hours vs other files, where time formatted as "xx.x days". Makes sorting by clicking in the column header a bit confusing. I had to add sorting by Date Modified in the "Sorting" window of the "Customize current view" screen to get it sorted right.
