During the process of adding files to my library from an external USB 300 GB hard drive I encountered this message which crashed media center.

It reads exactly as follows:

mediacenter.exe - application error

The instruction at "0x00f03243" referenced memory at "0x0133f410". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to terminate program.

I have moved the drive to several locations including network computers and I still get this message. I have about 60k media files and it normally gets within about 1000 of completion before it takes a dump.

my system is:
P4 3.4 lga775 2mb cache 64bit enabled
3gb dual channel ddr2-533
xp pro sp-2

Very strange message but I would like to be able to complete the library update, any help would be appreciated.

It may be a bad media file.

try importing smaller amounts of files till you find the offending bad media file
