From build 11.1.111:

10. Changed: MC no longer attempts to play MP4 files with DirectShow, but instead always uses QuickTime. (too many buggy mp4 filters)

You may be able to rename the file to mpg get MC to use DirectShow.

I never had any issues with "buggy" filters so why are you just removing this important feature ?

I tried to go back to 11.1.111 but library format seems to have changed.

If your mp4 files are audio, you can rename them to m4a. MC will play m4a in its native playback engine via DirectShow.

MP4 media can be played in DirectShow again in MC 11.1.117.

You must tell the program to use DirectShow by going to

Tools - > Options -> Playback -> DirectShow Playback Settings...
