Can MC recognise multiple genres in media files
« on: October 09, 2005, 02:39:05 pm »

I'm using JRMC10 at the moment, does everything I need it to do except recognise more than one genre that is present in an audio file. I am ripping all my music to .ogg and can easily update the tags to include more than one genre (i.e. having genres pop, disco and funk), so that when I search for a specific genre, this track would appear whenever one of these genres was searched. At the moment when the file is imported only the first genre is imported and used in the Genre field in the library/database tag info. Can someone tell me if JRMC11 or the next release will be supporting multiple genre fields in the library so they can be searched this way? I think it would be acceptable to have one main genre (like pop/rock/classical) and then any number of sub genres which could still be queried when Genre is searched. I thought about using the Comment field instead for a secondary genre, but then it would become complex when searching as both Genre and Comment fields would need to be queried when searching for a specific music type.

Thanks

I've just answered my only question. All I need to do is add ALL these Genres into the genre field. The search facility looks for the genre name anywhere in this field and is not just trying to find fields that exactly match this. So I had a song with genre as 'Pop, Soul, Funk', then a search for 'Pop' or 'Soul' or 'Funk' would result in the song appears in the search results. One problem I may have is with genres like Rock and Punk Rock, and if I only wanted to have Rock music but not Punk Rock in my search results I would need to create a smartlist which included all songs with genres as Rock, but exclude songs which had genres Punk Rock. I suppose Punk Rock would be a sub-genre to Rock, so it would be logical to assume a search for Rock should always include results for other types of Rock. if anyone has any comments or have similar methods for querying their music librarys let me know.

Alternatively, you could create a new field and set it up as a semicolon-delimited list (genre is treated as a standard string field in MC). You could then to a "Move/Copy field" from [Genre] to [Your New Custom Field]. Finally, do a "Find & Replace" to replace instances of "&" or "," with ";" (this will alow you to have multiple entries in the field). You can then use this new field in view schemes etc to display the genres individually.

eg. "Pop, Soul, Funk" will become "Pop; Soul; Funk" and these three values will appear as individual entries in any view schemes you create. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're after, but it's worth checking out.

EDIT: Just noticed you're using MC10 ~ I'm pretty sure v10 had the features I mentioned... if not, give 11 a go

Actually I would expect a good program to support such a feature without a need for work-arounds (btw: also multiple artists and albums would be good features too). In addition I personally do not like to use the database, since I would like to transfer my MP3 to different locations. So the ID3 tags would be the right place to store this information. In that special case the way Win Media Player does it, would be the best solution.

Rubberduck would you mind telling me how to do this in WMP?
I'm just currious... I'm in the advanced tag editor and i get a single
drop down for genre....

Cheers

Strong agreement with this point. The standard Genre tag in the mp3 file should be gracefully handled by MC, as a colon-separated or slash-separated list.

The method of inputting multiple genres into Win MP is to simply type the list separated by semi-colons.

For example, you could type "Rap; East Coast Rap; Hip-Hop" into a
Genre field for a track (or multiple tracks, or albums) and it would be handled gracefully, appearing in multiple genre lists from then on.

This works for Artist as well, for example by typing "Bob Marley; Bob Marley & The Wailers; Bruce DJ and his dog"

Please implement this feature, it would be very handy!  ::)

Umm, you sure WMP is supporting the std Artist & Genre fields there ?

DO you use your tracks with other players, can they read those semi-colon delimited  fields ?

The reason (i think) that MC does not do it for those fields is the std does not say they are semicolon delimited. You can of course create your own custom fields that support this.

No, it doesn't write a semi-colon-delimited list to the mp3 tag, it writes only the first one in the list. The rest is kept in its own database.

This is still more useful than no support for multiples whatsoever.

In fact, it has some potential - considering the first item in the list to be the "main" item and others to be secondary. This could form a basis for considering a standard - because there seems to be a need for a main genre, then sub-genres. Similarly, there's a need for a main artist(s), as well as other, contributing artists.

In any case, if the standard doesn't specify an acceptable method for storing multiples in tags, the standard is in need of revision.
