File xfr to ipod failure--or not?
« on: December 01, 2005, 12:22:23 pm »

I'm a long-time and very enthusiastic user of the old Media Jukebox. I have an iPod but don't like iTunes, so a few days ago I installed the trial version of MC11 (11.0.316.0) in hope that I could quit using iTunes to update my iPod.

I used MC to transfer several albums, probably 50 files in all, to the iPod. Everything appeared to work fine, but later when I tried to listen to these albums  (no longer connected to the computer) they weren't there, or at least don't show up. Looking at the iPod via iTunes doesn't reveal them, either. I had exited MC and shut down the machine before disconnecting the iPod. Was there some kind of close-out step I was supposed to do?

Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to how much free space I had before the xfr, so I don't know whether the space was consumed or not. I'm reluctant to use MC again with the iPod until/unless I resolve this.

did you initialize your iPod to work with MC? If not, you can do so by looking for your iPod in the navigation tree under 'drives and devices', right-click the iPod and then select 'initialize'. Be careful: you will loose all data on the iPod when you do so.

Try transfering again afterwards and see if that did the trick.

Thanks for the replies, but this is not sounding very reassuring at all. 11.0 is what you get when you dl the MC trial, and I don't want to init my pod. And I'm really spooked by that restart loop thread. Maybe I'll just put up with iTunes.

I'm wondering if MC really knows my pod is a pod. I just looked at what it shows under devices and it lists the files I "transferred" yesterday, but no others. As if it thinks it's just a removable drive (E:) with those files on it. Btw I dl'd the iPod plugin and it appeared to install without problems, but it doesn't appear in the list of handheld plugins (Tools/Plugin Manager/Handheld). Maybe I'll start all over--with the iPod disconnected so no harm can come to it.

Jimm,

After you transferred the 50 files from Media Center, did the original files that you transferred with iTunes still show up on the IPOD?

What generation of IPOD do you have.  The version of 11 that you have works fine with music, though it does not include Cover Art or Video support for the new ipods...you would need to install the Beta version of 11 to get these features working.

IMO, If you already have all of the your files on the PC it is really worth initiallizing in Media Center and transferring the files to the IPOD from scratch.  All of the advanced features of Media Center (over iTunes) more than makes up for the inconvenience that re-transferring your files causes

razumik's right, it's worth the initialization.

Besides, the restart loop only happened to people using older alpha builds of MC 11.1. The current beta (11.1.71) is much more stable (it's a beta, not an alpha).

IMO, you shouldn't be scared and try it out as it has album art support and now can work side by side with iTunes.

In any case, if you don't want to try 11.1 beta, you should go with 11.0. To my knowledge, no one has ever reported getting into a restart loop with it.
