Save Tags to Files: What file formats are available?
« on: December 12, 2005, 12:08:13 pm »

Is there a table or something that specifies what file formats MC supports for writing tags directly to files?

If not, this would be very useful.

Some things of note would be if MC can save "Standard Tags", "Custom Library Tags"

There isn't a table, but if you have a specific question, we could probably help you out.

Basically, we try to use standard tagging whenver possible.  As they say though, the great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.

Here's a sort of table:

Audio format  -  tag format
Monkey's Audio  -  APE v.2
MP3  -  ID3 v.1.1 and 2.3
Musepack  -  APE v.2
Ogg Vorbis  -  Vorbis comments
Window Media Audio  -  Windows Media tags
FLAC with a third party plug-in  -  FLAC tags (identical with Vorbis comments)

Video format  -  tag format
Windows Media Video  -  Windows Media tags

Image format  -  tag format
JPEG  -  MJMD (proprietary)

About all library fields can be saved into the file tags. Each writable field has an option for the behavior.

The commonly used audio tags like Artist, Album, Name, Track Number, Date and Genre are written in styles which are generally compatible with other programs and HW devices. Also, some other tags are readable with some other programs/devices, but this varies a lot from a file format to another and a program/device to another. The rest of the tags can be saved at least in the proprietary style.
