.mp2 files don't play unless renamed
« on: January 28, 2006, 03:41:08 pm »

Having been prompted by the mpg=video mpeg=audio thread, I'd like to point out another apparent anomaly in the way Media Center handles some files.

I record radio programmes from a Nebula DTT card; this produces Mpeg 1 layer 2 audio files with an .mp2 extension. If they are imported into Media Center they look like video files, but they won't play. If you change the media type to audio, they still won't play. If you change the extension to .mp3 they will play.

Now these files may not be completely kosher, as they are broadcast stream files, but the fact that Media Center plays them as long as you change the extension implies that the inconsistency is with Media Center rather than the files.

If anyone can suggest a way of resolving this that does not involve renaming all the files, I would be most grateful.
