Dell DJ & MC v11.1.90 - SLOW Transfers & Other Bugs
« on: December 30, 2005, 10:31:56 am »

There's something wrong with the uploading/syncing with MC v11.1.90 and Dell DJs:

The transfer rate is terrible at around 0.6 MB/sec.  I seem to recall this happened early on in v11.0.xxx development as well.

Prior to upgrading from 11.0.<latest> to 11.1.90 I was getting atleast 6.0 MB/sec (and higher).

I did a test transferring 15 tracks using Dell DJ Explorer software and it was roughly 8~10 times quicker than using MC.

----

Also just noticed after syncing (to a selected Playlist in MC of all files on the DJ) and unplugging the DJ, when I plugged it back in MC said it had 52 files to sync!!  They were already on the DJ and MC said they were all synced just 30 seconds ago.  Something is not right with syncing, I presume.  The 52 files 'picked out' where not modified and were completely random (out of some 600+ files on the DJ currently).

After the 52 synced, uplugged DJ and plugged it back in.  Now MC says 42 files need to be synced!!  Some (not all) of the 42 it just synced in the prior 52-sync attempt.

Next, I deleted all the files off the DJ and synced back 600+ files to it (using MC).  Unplugged the DJ, exited MC, restarted MC and plugged the DJ back in.  Now, MC says 83 files need to be synced!! and even an entire album is marked to be synced and it is on the DJ and plays fine (I verified).

----

The right-click menu for a Dell DJ node under Drives & Devices is missing some options (like Synchronize).

----

The right-click menu for tracks on your Dell DJ is missing the Select All option (like the iPod's right-click menu has).

I think there may be a general problem here - I've been getting very slow transfers with an iRiver H10 and a generic flash memory player.  Transfers to both are fine with Windows Explorer.

We're working on the menus.

As to the odd syncing issues.  Were the files originally put on the device with MC 11.0?

I'm not sure what to tell you about the transfer rate.  I haven't seen that.

Yes, they were put on there with 11.0.  Then, to test I deleted them all and added them again (synced by 11.1.90, slowly of course).  It appears 11.1 just has a problem syncing (never really gets synced or is misinterpreting what the Dell DJ is reporting).

The slow transfer was an issue in 11.0 development and Steve figured it out and it was not just with the Dell DJ.  It appears the problem has resurfaced.  What kind of transfer rates to you get when syncing a Dell DJ?

2mb/sec

Not stunningly fast.  But not horrible.

Ok. I'll retest with the latest build and see if I see a difference in speed (for grins).

Retested and still get 0.5~0.7 mb/sec  :(

I have a iPod Nano too.  Not plugged in at the time (the dock is though).  MC knows (supports) the Nano.  Does this make a difference (for you) when you transfer to the Dell Pocket DJ, actually.  No other USB devices were plugged in at the time of this test.

I've had issues with one of my own machines where my high speed USB ports could end up as low speed because I had a slow device plugged in.

That may have been the same machine that forced me to buy a USB PCI card just to get decent USB ports.  (My canon scanner just would not run on that machine until I did that.  I think the problem chipset was a SIS of some sort.)

Um, perhaps posting a log file when this occurs might be good.  Help -> Configure Debug logging.  Probably just the handheld stuff.

Ok, I'll do that (logging).  I have other devices (Nano, ext HD, etc) that go fast on the same USB port(s) and transfering to the Dell DJ using Dell's DJ Explorer is fast.  Just MC 11.1 is slow (weird).  I may be able to test with MC 11.0 on another PC and see if it is still fast (like it used to always be).

Ok...I did a test with MC 11.1 and Dell DJ Explorer and transfered the same 4 files (31.8 mb).  The DJ Explorers was about 4x faster than MC 11.1.  To be honest, maybe that is the usual transfer rate (2.0~2.5 mb/sec) (I could have been off on that 'memory').  The DJ Explorer is definitely always 4x or more faster than MC 11.1 in transfers.  Even in aquiring the list of whats on the Dell DJ is faster (blink of the eye) using DJ Explorer.

Here's the log of the MC 11.1 sync of these 4 files (mp3s):

Also, synchronization is still an issue.  MC 11.1 insists 15~80 files are out of sync each time you restart MC or unplug/plugin the Dell DJ (after syncing again and again and again).  Sometimes it is many of the same files with the addition of 'new' ones it thought were in-sync last time.  It's all strange, but there appears to just be some problem with whatever logic is determining something has 'changed' with a file (as the files are all there already on the Dell DJ).  Any idea what the plug-in for Dell DJ handheld support is testing for in this area?  File sizes, timestamps, etc?

Just did a test with MC 11.0.316 and Portable Drives 11.0.41 and it transfered at the old (FAST) rate of >2.0 mb/sec.  So, something is different using MC 11.1.93 and PD 11.1.92.

I see the call to GetConversionEncoderPlugin and am wondering if that isn't slowing you down.  Should be the same in the old version, however.

It appears "CWMDMSupport::UploadFile: Performing Insert3(...) to store item" takes all the time (longer).

We used to use a Nomad plugin but now we use the standard WMDM.

Could you do a comparison with Windows Media Player?  It should also be using WMDM.

Ok...WMP 10 is slow like MC (guess because WMDM).  Dragging to Windows Explorer node is slow.  Only using Dell DJ Explorer node under Windows Explorer (or standalone) is fast.

That sux...am I out-of-luck?  Any clue why WMDM would be fast on your PC and not mine (a DELL 4700 less than 1 year old).  It can't be hardware, must be some software config issue or something.  I have all the MS updates (I rechecked just now).  I'm looking around now in Control Panel applets to see if I can tweak anything.  If you have any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

Also, any clue on the sync problems??

You might try deleting the MC.dic files from the device.   Then in options do a redetect.  This will trash your settings.

You've already tried formatting, right?  (Or deleting all the files off it.)

I will try again...I can't see MC.dic directly (at all) (using any program).  Not sure how that would slow down WMP as well.

Also, I'm not using PlayForSure firmware, are you?  What DELL DJ (or Pocket DJ) firmware do you use in your DJ testing?

I was responding to the sync issues.

Looks like version 1.00.09.

I just brought up explorer and double clicked the dell dj.  The MC files were there.

Do you have a drive letter assigned for the Dell DJ in Windows Explorer?  I don't.

I have a special Dell DJ Explore node (plug-in) and Dell Pocket DJ node (available from control panel as well).  Do you have these as well?

Not a drive but it shows up as Dell Digital Jukebox (My Jukebox)  Portable Media Device.

And in the control panel I have a Portable Media Device Node.

I upgraded from the latest non-PlayForSure firmware to the latest PlayForSure firmware for my Dell Pocket DJ and now it all works.  The transfer rate is 3.7 mb/sec and higher (at times) now!!  I'm currently uploading 4.6 gb to the Dell DJ.  When it's all done, I'll see if playlist synchronization works correctly and report back.

Great...all is well now as synchronizations work too and, new feature, the playlists actually get stored on the Dell DJ (previously just the files included in the playlist got downloaded).

Newest bug:

Now that playlists are listed under the Dell DJ node (under Drives & Devices), when you select a playlist the corresponding tracks are not listed (like are with an iPod).  Also, under iPod there is a Playlist node then the playlists are under it.  For Dell DJ, there is no Playlist node as each playlist is listed directly under Dell DJ.  Can this not be consistant?  Also, iPod as Artists, Album and Genre nodes, Dell DJ does not have them (only viewable in the contents pane on the right).  Is this not possible either (to be consistant)?

What's the current thinking on playlist issues?  WMDM problem and really out of your control?

Um, what I'm seeing is playlists not supported by WMDM for that device.

I might have an old firmware.  What are you running?  (And where did you find it?  If you happen to have that.)

I get all Dell DJ and Pocket DJ firmware from Dell's website.  I'm runing the Play-For-Sure enabled firmware now (because of sync speed problems that started this thread).  Information says: 2.20.07 is the version currently.  The 1.xx.xx versions were/are not Play-For-Sure enabled.

Dell DJ firmware.
Dell Pocket DJ firmware.

Update to the Playlist problems:

I built three Playlists that are in the sync playlists for my Dell DJ.  Each playlist has 63~65 tracks from a master playlist of all the tracks on my Dell DJ (a master sync list, basically, for my Dell DJ).  When synching all playlists with the Dell DJ (four total), the 3 subset playlists only end up with about 15 tracks in each on the Dell DJ (in the correct order, just missing 50 or so tracks that are in the playlists in MC).  The master playlist (off all the tracks) syncs fine (has all 600+ tracks in it, basically).

Yes, the files are all there.  Just the playlists are 'mising' (dropping) tracks when syncing (they don't match what is defined in MC).  Basically, I have one large master playlist that contains all the tracks on my Dell DJ (650+ tracks).  Then I have 3 playlists that each contain 1 track from each album in the master playlist (in random order).

Now, I think the actual 650+ master playlist is missing tracks as well when synced with the DJ.  Again, all the tracks are there and just the playlist is dropping tracks.

Was talking to John.  It looks like I'm running an older version of the Dell DJ.  So I think I'm out of luck on the playlist front.

John is looking for a player that exhibits the same (or a similar) failure mode.

You mean by older a Gen 1 DJ with the white front on it?

Or do you mean a Gen 2 DJ with an older version of the firmware?  If older firmware, can you not install the latest version from the links I provided above?

Silver/Gray front.

I'm assuming it is a gen 1.  Most recent firmware is 1.20.03.

John,

I think I can safely say that tracks only get put in the playlist on Dell DJ (like Nomad) if the track(s) in the playlist have to be uploaded to the Dell DJ.  Other tracks (in the playlist) that exist currently on the Dell DJ and don't need to be re-uploaded do not get added properly to the playlist (on the Dell DJ).

Any progress on this problem that another user said only started in build 95 or so? (I don't know when it started, really).

Do you think playlist support will work (be fixed) someday (soon) for MC 11.1 release?

Thanks.

Wow, I thought it was stated already that you and John were having playlist problems (seen 'em).  I thought John was even working on a fix (related to Nomad, same issues).  I guess I misunderstood (sorry).

So, as you see it there, there is no problem with playlist support for Dell DJs and Nomads.  Is that correct?

No, there certainly appears to be an issue.  John has been trying to recreate the failure for a while now.  Up to this point without success.  Until we duplicate the failure it will be very tough to fix.

(I had a seperate playlist issue.)

JohnT,

Yes, playlists do upload correctly now (I'm very excited!!).

Only a few quirks when uploading (syncing) playlist only uploads:
1. MC locks up on this type of sync (or at the end of track uploads) and does not give any indication of progress (uploading/syncing).  I'm syncing 3 playlists each with 64 tracks in them (generally) and 1 playlist with 650+ tracks in it (sometimes)
2. MC isn't smart about knowing if a sync is needed if you use Option -> Handheld and change the playlist(s) to be synced (MC doesn't figure it out) for the Dell DJ (for example)

Also, I still don't see 'Select All' on the right-click menu for tracks when via Dell DJs handheld device (right-clicking in the right-most pane as iPod Nano has).  At this time, Delete is the only right-click menu option showing.

Thank you very, very much for making playlist support work!!
