how to add same song on multiple playlists
« on: December 30, 2005, 03:25:34 pm »

How would i go about adding a single track to multiple playlists.  For example i have two night time playlists, one called Deep Elektrik Dream and another simply called Nite, but both contain diff. genres of music. There are the few exceptions where a certain song would sound good on both playlists.  How do i make a song appear under both playlists? I though i accidently did this once by using a semicolon in between the names of the playlists, but i was wrong.

You know you can add a track, or tracks to a playlist by rightclicking
and selecting send to -> Playlist - > Play list of your choice

Do it for each play list you wish the track to be a part of...

I'm sure theres heaps of other ways of adding them to more than
one playlist but thats an obvious one.

simpler method:

in the action window...

file properties > file playlists

select file(s) in the list, place ticks in the playlists in the action window to add those files to those playlists.

-marko.

ps.
if the tickbox is empty, then none of the selected files are in that playlist
if the tickbox is ticked, then all of the selected files are in that playlist
if the tickbox is filled with a square, then some of the selected files are in that playlist.

Marko, thanks, that tip helps out in many ways.  Is there any character i could type in my field properties to achieve the same thing? Can this same trick be applied to smartlists? say there is one song that breaks the rules of a designed smartlist that i want to add to that list manually.

On a related question about "sending to playlist" why do only four of my playlist group show up under that dialog? I have more than those four playlist groups and playlist in my library.

none that I'm aware of, but keep reading...

smartlists and playlists are two very different things.

A playlist is just that, a list of files in a pre-defined order. when you add a file to a playlist using tickboxes or "send to.." MC appends the file to the end of the list. It is a static thing, and you decide what goes in the list.

A smartlist on the other hand, is really just a "saved search". When you load it, the search is run and all the files that satisfy the search rule are listed. You can then take this list and do many and varied things with it.
the only way to add a file to that list is to set whatever field propert(y)(ies) you need to set for it to satisfy the search rules for that smartlist.

the send to.. menu will only display playlists.
you cannot send a file to a smartlist and have MC update the nescessary fields for it to be included automatically. you must update them manually to make the file match the search.

hope that helps a bit.
