Can I change the Thumbnails Base Path?
« on: January 01, 2006, 01:04:37 pm »

I have my pictures and music files on a server and access the data from different PC's. I can store the DB and Cover Art on the server but I can't see if it is possible to change the Thumbnails Base Path so I don't have to maintain it and every machine. Is it possible (maybe directly through the registry)?

It is in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 11\Properties

Value name: Thumbnails - Base Path

However, it is not a good idea to set it on a network path. MC needs fast thumbnail access and it builds new thumbnails dynamically. This is much slower through a LAN connection. The whole idea of using thumbnails instead of the actual image files is about speed.

I use my main library on three PCs. When I have made changes to the library I make a library backup and restore it on the other PCs. Also, before using the restored library I copy the thumbnails file (it is a single file in MC11.1) to the other PCs. I have set the library and my custom thumbnails location to be on a local HD. These locations are identical on all PCs. At first a restored library didn't find the thumbnails on my other PCs, but after a few erase/rebuild attempts it seems to work now.

I understand your point but I would like to try it and evaluate the performance. By the way in the latest version (11.0.316) thumbnails are not in a single file (so you must use a beta).

The standard key is [Application Data]J River\[Product Name]\Thumbnails\ which makes MC11 save thumbnails in a rather cryptic structure under C:\Documents and Settings\myuser\Application Data\J River\Media Center 11\Thumbnails.

I changed the key to \\myserver\share\Application Data\J River\Media Center 11\Thumbnails but it doesn't seem to work as new thumbnails are not generated. What is wrong?
