MC 11.1 - Slow at Startup Problem
« on: January 02, 2006, 08:01:26 pm »

MC 11 is slow (unresponsive) for about 5 seconds after a fresh startup.  I noticed this in build 90 as well (the 1st 11.1 build I tried).

I have 7500+ mp3s in the library and no (none) extra plug-in installed.

To test: startup MC and move the cursor immediately over the Help menu text and it takes about 5 secs for it to highlight (clicking anywhere in MC prior to this time does nothing, MC is locked-up doing something).

It could be Podcasting or a handheld.  You can use logging to see exactly what MC is doing during those 5 seconds.  Let us know. (in a new thread)

Thansk.

Ok, it's probably Poscasting.  Which of the many debug logging checkboxes do I need to check?

Also, can this not be fixed and made a background or multi-threaded task?  Generally, a locked up application is annoying and worrysome and the first think you notice running the application (gives a bad impression of the software, I mean).

Turn all the logging on.  If you use a debug viewer (follow the link on the debugging screen), you can watch them in real-time as you start.

Let us know what you find.  Thanks.

Seems to be enumerating handheld devices that is slow.  I only have a memory card reader plugged in (no card inserted) that I told MC to ignore (not support) and that's it.  It's the same setup I had for MC 11.0 and this delay at startup did NOT happen.  With the card reader unplugged the delay seems to have gone away.

and after plugging the card reader back in and telling MC to not support it again (MC prompted me, I mean), the delay at startup seems to have gone away (handeld enumeration is under 500 ms).  I guess MC was in some 'twilight zone' condition and has returned from there (finally).  If it happens again, I'll report again.

Just FYI,

MC takes quite a bit longer to startup when my ipod is docked.
It starts instantly when no ipod is connected.
Not saying it's a problem, but it's the way it is.
It's gotta read the contents of the device in order to display it in the tree.

Sadly, the 10 second startup delay is back. I did nothing except stop using (exited) MC for about 20 mins and restared MC and the 10 second delay is back.  Same problem (handheld enumeration delay).
