Is there a trick to getting a VOB added to the library? I've followed the instructions others have posted about browsing to the VOB first and then adding it to the library, but when I do this nothing visible happens and the VOB is not shown anywhere in my library.

I've also tried importing the entire folder where the VOBs are, and in that case they do get added, but the problem is that when I try to play them MC can't and says there was an error playing the last few files.

Interestingly, when I browse to the VOBs I can play them from there, I just can't get them into my library for easy future access.


Also, even when I can play the VOB by browsing to it, I'm not getting any sound at all.


Any ideas for any of these problems?

You need dvd player software installed, such as WinDVD.
Media Center relies on those codecs to play the movie.
You need to get it working with WinDVD or similar first, audio and video.
When that's working, then you can expect MC to play them.

You don't want to import the whole folder into MC.
Only the very first vob file, usually vts_01_1.vob

I have hundreds of them on my machine and MC is handling the playback fine.

I can play the DVD fine from the disk, but when I rip the VOBs to HD I have problems.

I suppose the sound issue might be related to the ripper I used, I'll look into that more.

As for the import problem, please describe in detail how to only import the first VOB file, "vts_01_1.vob". As I said, when I browsed to it and did the import command nothing happened. How else can I do it?

I rip the DVD to hard drive.
the creates a folder called VIDEO_TS.
I navigate to there in windows explorer.
Rightclick on the VTS_01_1.vob file.
Choose Media Center > Import.
MC shows 1 file imported.
Fill in the genre tag and attach the artwork.
Done.

If you follow that and it says 0 files imported, then you need to change a setting.
Go to File > Library > Import Media.
In there, uncheck the box that says "exclude files previously removed from library.
Cancel.
Go through the steps from windows explorer again.
Should import 1 file.

Ok, that did it. The trick was to navigate to the file via Windows Explorer and import from there. I had been navigating to it from within MC and importing from that Right-Click Import option.

Why does it work the one way and not the other?

No idea.  could be a bug.  post it in the latest build post bug list if you can dupe it always.

My dvd ripping program opens up explorer after it's done, so it's convenient for me just to use the right click from there.

After long trail and error attempts I could eventually import some vob's myself.
It is definitely not what one would call a user-friendly or elegant procedure and not documented anywhere! I think to remember that at some point in the past (maybe MC10) that worked much better.

Much easier to convert the vob's to divx first, although one looses some of the add-ons around the movie, especially if you have a fast cpu. A 90 minute movie is done in about 2 hours. I use AutoGK to convert and also tried the new Divx6.1 converter.

I'm still not getting sound to work, but I haven't had much more chance to play with it yet.

The reason I really want the VOBs is because I live in Japan and my wife is Japanese and depending on who in watching the movie we might want to see in English or Japanese and with or without subtitles in English or Japanese.
