Accessing or Merging Different Libraries
« on: January 30, 2006, 05:59:04 am »

Hello,
is there no other way to acces 2 different Librarys than SWITCHING ? Is no view possible per Library at the same time?
Can I merge 2 different Libraries into one ?
Thanks

Export
- Select any one library.
- File->Library->Export to XML

Import
- Select the other library
- Select the XML file you saved, should have a .mpl extension , in win explorer. Right click->Import

This is the only way i know of, to merge 2 libraries.

What i'm not sure about is if you have common items between the two libraries,
whether the import will add duplicate entries.

As always, make a backup of your library before trying this.

What is the opposite of "export to XML" ?  If I do your suggestion , after the export  the result is an xml file of my LIBRARY (lets say number1).
Then to explorer and an import what results in a document in MC. A XML document.
If this should work how can I from within explorer choose into witch LIBRARY (lets say number 2) this xml must be merged ?

Hi hit_ny,
the only way I experienced to day is
1) select in Library the target one (lets say "Library 2")

2) File=> Open media

3) in window "Select Media file": point to the folders or songs  to get them in the playlist

4) select them in the playlist, still being in "Libray 2", and "import" them.

 :P
Nothing better? Lot of work!! I am talking about 2 pc's with each a Library with 30000songs.... (95% different)   ?

I forgot a step, you need to rename LIBRARY(1).xml to LIBRARY(1).mpl

mpl is the format MC uses to save all tag info to a XML file.

Once you have the mpl, then you right click it in explorer->Import

I also read you have nearly 30000 files in the other library. It will take a long time to import that many files in mpl format, maybe a few hours. MC will look like its frozen during this time and you cannot do anything till it finsihes.

Making sure everything imported ok will also be harder.

Maybe its better to break the job up into smaller batches. I would suggest you try with just 10 albums first to get a feel for it and an idea for how long MC will take.

To do this,
- select a viewscheme that has an albums column in the upper panes.
- Select 10 albums, this will show all the files with them in the lower pane.
- Select all the files and then File->Export Playlist->(select MPL Playlist)->(give a name for this playlist to save)->OK

Now switch to the next library, File->Library->Library(2)

then find that mpl file in explorer, right click, Import

Then look in the library and see whether it imported correctly or not.

Once you get more comfortable with this method, you can maybe select 100 or 1000 albums next time to save to mpl and slowly import the whole library(1) into library(2).

This is the only way i know of, if for example you have already tagged, rated and done AA for the library(1) and want to merge it with library (2). If not then why not import the other files as new into library 2.

you say its 95% different, i'm not sure what will happen if MC imports a duplicate. Try an experiment, include maybe 2 albums in the mpl export that you know are already there in library 2 and see what happens. Do backups as always.
