What is wrong with my LAME Custom String?
« on: February 03, 2006, 11:39:43 am »

What about this string is making the new LAME Encoder lock up during initialization?

-V2 --vbr-new -q0 --lowpass 19.7 --cwlimit 10.7 -b96 --athaa-sensitivity 1

I've cut and chopped and can't seem to figure out why it keeps freezing. For now I'm having to use the old version but I'd like to be able to move up to this newer version.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Unfortunately bad command line parameters cause LAME to hang.  None of the "stock" choices should cause this.

Try to keep removing pieces until you find a combo that doesn't hang.  I'd guess it's just one of the parameters.

The current LAME version is developed to give optimal VBR results with -Vx (x=0...9) and additionally --vbr-new. At least the --athaa-sensitivity switch doesn't work with LAME 3.97b2 and i guess the same is true with the --cwlimit switch (I have never tried --cwlimit with 3.97. --athaa-sensitivity was used when the actual -V settings were tweaked during the 3.97 alpha stage.)

I would recommend using the current encoder version with VBR High & Fast options in MC (=  exactly the same as -V2 --vbr-new). Anything else is not needed and possibly lowers the audio quality. All currently recommended LAME 3.97 settings are here: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=28124

These Hydrogen Audio forums contain a lot of information about the LAME 3.97b2 development work:

HA is also the LAME developers' public forum.
