Archive support
« on: February 03, 2006, 08:23:34 pm »

Classical music pieces are almost always divided in parts, or movements.
This means that it is necessary to
- either define a folder for each piece to hold the individual movements' files
- or put those individual files within an archive.

The latter option is the neater one (less chance to accidentaly delete a movement, for instance) but then the playing and library programs must be able to read within the archive.

foobar2000 already has such a feature: it reads archives (ZIP, RAR etc.) directly.
Are there plans to add such an enhancement to MediaCenter (or else, is there a third-part plugin that does that?)

Why wouldn't you just use separate, differently named files for each movement, e.g.,

J. S. Bach - 01 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, Cantata BWV 199_ Recitativo.mp3
J. S. Bach - 02 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, Cantata BWV 199_ Aria.mp3
J. S. Bach - 03 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, Cantata BWV 199_ Recitativo.mp3
J. S. Bach - 04 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, Cantata BWV 199_ Aria.mp3
J. S. Bach - 05 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, Cantata BWV 199_ Recitativo.mp3
J. S. Bach - 06 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, Cantata BWV 199_ Choral con Viola obligato.mp3
J. S. Bach - 07 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, Cantata BWV 199_ Recitativo.mp3
J. S. Bach - 08 - Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, Cantata BWV 199_ Aria.mp3

Or am I missing something?

Of course I do...

However, that means that for a single piece of music there must be many objects.
Your example (Bach's Cantata 199) requires 9 objects:
- One folder to contain the files and
- 8 files, one for each movement.

Programs that support archives allows for just one object (file) for each piece.
In the case of your example, that archive could be named e.g.
Bach,J.S - Mein Herz schwimmt in Blut, Cantata BWV.199.zip

Implementing such an enhancement may not be complicated - Windows XP already treats a ZIP archive as a folder in Explorer and shows its contents directly.
