Help with directshow please!
« on: March 17, 2006, 04:42:25 am »

OK ive read i thing most of of the posts but havent really got anywhere... I have a vast number of lossless apple files m4a and want to convert them to FLAC. I can play both file types back but i cant convert them. I understand the issue is to do with using Directshow. I have installed most combinations of  FFDshow etc but either i get "unable to playback" and it wont play back m4a at all or it plays back using Quicktime. Does anyone now have the definite account of how to get Mediacentre to use directshow to playback lossless files created using itunes and then to be able to convert them to Flac

Sorry, I did not realize that your files are of Apple Lossless format. I thought they were AAC.

Apple lossless format is trickier to handle. MP4 splitter and FFDShow will not do.

The only DirectShow filter that I know can handle Apple Lossless is Muvee Technologies QuickTimeSource filter.

Unfortunately, I do not know how that filter came to my computer. It probably came with the computer, or was installed with some other commercial product. Therefore I am not able to tell you where to find the filter. Try google.

If you have this filter, AND make sure you do NOT have Haali Media Splitter (uninstall it if you have it), then you will be able to play Apple Lossless format using DirectShow, and you will be able to convert.

Also, you may need to uninstall 3ivx decoder and splitter filters. These pretend to handle the file but actually do not.
