More than just genre
« on: February 07, 2006, 08:46:15 pm »

I'm looking for advice on how people handle categorizing songs into more than just a simple genre field.

For example, I have some Christmas songs that I don't usually want to listen to (unless it's around the Christmas season). For these I set their genre to Christmas. The problem is that some of these are rock Christmas songs, some are classical, and some are choral. I'm looking for a way to filter them more.

I guess I'd like two genre/type fields so I could have things like:

Rock - Christmas
Rock - Love Song
Rock - Angry
Pop - Love Song
Choral - Christmas
Classical - Opera
Classical - Christmas
...etc

Has anyone done anything like this and, if so, how's it worked out? What are the pitfalls?

Thanks.

You could set up your own custom genre field and set is as a semicolon-delimited list. This way you could have multiple genre entries per file: "Christmas; Rock" etc.

You could then create a view scheme and have two columns with your custom field. Clicking on, say, "Rock" in the first column will then allow you to see the other genres in the second column...
