Hardware recommendations?

I'm looking to buy or put together a media PC for my living room, and am looking for suggestions.

I'll be running MC11. I need digital coax audio out. Probably S-Video out as well. I want a DVD-ROM drive. I need a serial port for an IRman. I just need a small hard drive, as storage will be elsewhere on my network. I'd like it to be as quiet and small as possible.

Has anyone used any of the Shuttle PCs for this? Do they perform well as is, or would they need a new video or audio card? Does anyone have any tips for putting this together?

I have used a Shuffle - it was great, so I bought another one.  Sadly the newer one has been back to the shop too many times, and is now sitting in the recycle bin.

I'm itching to try out a MacMini for the job.  If I do, I post the results - trauma...
