CD Writer Speed Problems
« on: September 21, 2002, 05:20:50 pm »

I am on my THIRD 48x CD-RW drive. This latest drive is seen by my system as 16x!

It seems windows is only seeing these 48x write drives RE-WRITE speed and not their WRITE speed.

My previous 48x Lite-On drive for example was only seen as a 12x WRITER which is it's RE-WRITE speed.  This new drive is seen as a 16x which is it's RE-WRITE SPEED.  What the heck is going on ?

What does MJ say your Write Speed is under "Options/CD Writer Settings"? Does it still say the same thing after you "detect"?

I don't know what the problem might be. I just bought a Buslink cheapo CD-RW at CompUSA for $99 and it seems to work fine. 40x burn speed.
Does yours use it's own drivers? Is there a second CD-RW drive on the machine that might be taking over? I don't know, I'm just WAGing.

Did you check Control Panel->System->Devices
->CDROM-> Properties?
? ? ? ? ?

Heh, I was just at Best Buy and saw that Buslink, I almost bought it, but went for the other cheapo Digital Reseach.

The only thing  I can think of is 48x writers are maybe to new? The current set of ASPI drivers just dont see them? I know lots of guys who have 40x drives that work great. All types of models from DR's up to Plextor's. But no one I know has a 48. Wonder if that's the case?

The problem is most likely due to them being so new that no software supports them yet.  I only use TDK burners and TDK blanks.

That's what I am thinking.

I have tried all burners to be honest. Most seem to be the same. Except for Yamaha's. They have horribly slow spin up times. And my old 32x TDK wouldn't work under Windows 2000 at all when it first came out. :)

I seem to remember a posting somewhere , sometime saying that it also depends on the speed capability of the blank that you're using......

True, but the blanks I am using are 32x and in my older 16x the were seen as 16x very easily. In my 3x they were seen as 32x.
