Cannot direct to second sound card
« on: March 13, 2006, 09:16:07 pm »

Hi, I sucessfully installed a second sound card (E-MU 0404) and had MC11 directing output to it, when it suddenly cut and redirected all sound to the first (audigy 2ZS) card.  Now, even if I select the E-MU card in the "Playback Options" all sound is still directed to the Audigy.  I have tried updating all sound card drivers (and re-installing them) and have MC11.1.144.

Any ideas?

I've never seen that.

If you can't get Windows to cooperate, you could try flipping what PCI slots your cards are using.

Otherwise, can you use ASIO to output?

I did some further testing.  Turns out the mp3 files play through the second card (ASIO).  All the mp4 files get routed through the first sound card (which is set as default for Quick time/Windows..).

As MC plays a playlist, it switches between the two cards depending on the file format!

what can I do about this?

Install and enable DirectShow filter playback for mp4 files. (Options > Playback > DirectShow)

Otherwise, stick to open formats like mp3, ogg, ape, etc.

Even with the DirectShow filters, looks like the protected mp4's (.m4p) are played through the card set up for Quicktime.  the .m4a files are OK.  Cannot convert them either.

Looks like I am paying the price for actually PAYING for music on iTunes.

Ironic that those who take mp3's for free have less trouble...

That is correct. Protected m4p files can not be played by means of DirectShow filters. Routing  them to Quicktime is the only way to play them.
