ID3v2 ?
« on: September 20, 2002, 11:31:51 am »

I tried to go to www.id3.org and it didn't take me anywhere.  I don't really understand the differences between the different id tags.  I'd like to know what information I'd be losing if I turned the id3v2 tagging feature off in MJ.  It's taking forever for my files to update and sometimes the program hangs.  I really like the "fill properties from file name" option and it used to work much faster.  Can I still use that with the id3v2 tagging disabled?

Thanks!   :)

The major difference is that Id3v1 limits the number of characters in the fields to 30.  So, for example, it will automatically truncate whatever info you enter in the title field if it is longer than 30 characters.  At first, 30 characters sounds like a lot, but really, it's not.

Here's what I know about them:

ID3v1: Placed at end of file & contain basic tags (name, artist, album, comment, genre, year, and track no.). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

ID3v2: Placed at beginning of file & contain extended & custom tags

ID3v1 tags are solid, v2 can cause problem at times.

True as long as your talking about Id3v1 Not Id3v1.1

In Id3v1.1 the Comment Tag Is 28 Chrs, And 2 Chrs Are Use For Track # The First Byte Being "0" Bite, And The Second Is The Track # 0 To 255

Well Track Number Is In Id3v1.1 Not Id3v1

>> ID3v2: Placed at beginning of file
Well that is true for ID3v2.3 and before, that's not necessarily true with ID3v2.4

>> v2 can cause problem at times.
Well Said! Mostly due to the way they emplimented Id3v2 standards and then let everyone fend for them self on how to get it to work. With ID3v2 You Almost need a PHD.

One of the biggest differences relevant to your dilemma is that updating v1 tags never causes the entire file to have to be re-written, hence updates are relatively fast.

v2 tags are variable-length, and while many tag editing programs are "smart" about updates (e.g. padding out the tag segment), when it comes to a first-time edit (and often the only edit many of us do), it's extremely likely the entire file will have to be re-written to disk, which means it could take a while.
