Songs on iPod Video, but can't see them
« on: July 20, 2006, 12:24:29 pm »

I posted this as a reply to the other thread regarding the nano, and am having the same problems with my Ipod video.  I seem to be having the same problem.  Sorry if I'm not supposed to repeat, but was hoping for a response:

"I have an Ipod 60 GB.  I've used it to synch with MC for about 3 months with no problem.  Last week, I synched it once again with MC and am having the same problem as john describes with his nano.

My Ipod shows the photos, and I can scroll through them.  It shows blank for songs.  Nothing is there, no playlists, no files as far as the Ipod is concerned.

I synch it to MC, and everything's there.  All the files show up as "On device," all my playlists are there, and 49 GB of the ipod hard drive is filled.  The files also show up as on the Ipod using Windows Explorer.

I know I am not running itunes in the background, and have tried doing proper ejects and re-connecting.

I really, really don't want to have to reinitialize the Ipod.  And although john seems to think the problem is an new version of the updater, I don't know what an updater is, let alone how to find it and replace it with an older version.

Any thoughts, MC gurus?  Help!  (I'm supposed to go on 2 week vacation Saturday, away from computer and really want to listen to my songs!)

Thanks."

For your update question, try this thread:

A google search might tell you more about both the updater and the problem you're seeing.

Hello, again, Jim--thanks for the response as always.

The iPod instruction/FAQ thread you posted suggests that I try updating my iPod software, which the apple site says is updater6-26-06.  I'm going to guess this means the updater puts an updated version of the ipod software on the Ipod, which was created in June 2006.  I know I haven't updated my iPod software recently, because I don't use iTunes, so I'm going to guess I have the earlier version of the updater.

My concern is that in another thread, http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=34514.0, another iPod user said that he believes that the new updater was causing the same problem I am experiencing.  He went back to the old updater (the one I'm guessing I have) and all was well.  Should I not be concerned about installing the new updater on my iPod, or do you think the other user was having an isolated problem?

I tried the google searches regarding the updaters, and google gave me links to the other user's thread, and about a dozen Japanese sites.

If you think that the new iPod updater might solve my problem, I'll try installing it tonight.  The date (6-28-06) is consistent with the timing that this problem arose.

Thanks,
John

I'm sorry, but I don't know what the problem is.  I was just trying to help with the update question and maybe give you something else to try.

Last night, I restored the iPod using the 6-1-06 updater, and reloaded some of my songs onto the iPod and the playlists and songs showed up fine.  So I'm good to go for my vacation.  When I get back, I'll use the 6-26-06 updater and report back to the group whether this causes any problems as reported elsewhere for the nano.

Couple questions not related to problems with MC, but if there are any iPod+MC users who feel like sharing:

(1) when I update my iPod and do an eject, the iPod locks up.  I have to do a reset, and then everything's fine.  Anyone else see this happen?

(2) I'm going to guess that the problem that caused my iPod to "lose" my songs was just a bug or random event.  Do iPod users out there find that they have to do a restore from time to time, or is this rare?  Just curious.

Me too!  Just Purchased Brand new 4G Nano (preinstalled with firmware 1.2) and it is completely useless with media center.  All of the above mentioned problems exist for me also.  Files synched or manually added by media center do not appear AT ALL on the Ipod.  Then when I plug the ipod into another computer with I tunes 6 the Nano database is completly corrupted and unrecognzable.
If anyone knows of a workaround please post.
