I have read the FAQ and tried a bunch of expressions but I not goo dat this at all. I'm trying to exclude 2 folders on my PC. They have to be path exlcusions because tags are mixed up on purpose.

I was trying things along this line:

-[filename (path)]=L:\Jamaican Archive\Various Artists

Because of the space, the string posted above will actually exclude the path L:\Jamaican and then perform a default search on Archive\Various Artists

try quotes or square brackets:

-[filename (path)]=[L:\Jamaican Archive\Various Artists]

-[filename (path)]="L:\Jamaican Archive\Various Artists"

[filename (path)] and [filename (name)] can be a bit of a handful to type in the search box, don't you think?

I added keywords for mine, cutting the typing down to fnp= or fnn=
(Go to: options > library > field > edit)

Right thanks, I forgot about the space. The FAQ got me thinking about some other things to try in my current quest to sort out multi-albums that have been edited from Multiple Artist to a specific one in Album Artist. Anyway, Marko, are you saying you edited the fields to shorter character lengths because you often use them manually in the search box?

filename path rules also need a trailing backslash to complete the path and so return the desired results.

Dr. C, if you go to MC's options, then choose 'library', you should see a list of fields. Click on Artist to select it, then click on the edit button. (Note: this is just for looking, you are not going to change anything here)

See that in the bottom right there is a keywords field? so, when searching or filtering by [artist] you can use ar= instead of [artist]=
press 'cancel' to close the edit dialogue.

Select the [filename (path)] field and click on the edit button. add fnp= to the keywords and click OK to save and close.
 now, instead of typing out:
-[filename (path)]=[L:\Jamaican Archive\Various Artists\], you will find that -fnp=[L:\Jamaican Archive\Various Artists\] produces the same result for less typing

I commonly use:

aaa= in place of [album artist (auto)]=
fnp= in place of [filename (path)]=
fnn= in place of [filename (name)]=
mt= in place of [media type]=
ft= in place of [file type]=
di= in place of [date imported]=
lp= in place of [last played]=
np= in place of [number plays]=
