Writing Ratings back to Tags
« on: June 29, 2006, 12:09:40 pm »

Howdy folks,

Just wondering is they anyway to embed the ratings set in MC back to the MP3's tag?

Version = 11.1.187
Update tags when file info = checked
Ratings > write changes to tag = checked

Cheers

You could try searching for each rating level by typing in [rating]=5 and then select all and show tag info--then typing in 5 again and pushing enter.  That might cause it to rewrite them.

OR: Also, make a manual playlist and copy all the songs rated 5 stars to it (as a backup) then search for 5 rated songs and again, select all and rate them all 1 and then back to 5.  This would probably definitely cause it to write them out.

Counter question: is there a way to force all ratings to be removed from the files but kept in MC?  I forgot to uncheck the box and it saved ratings in the files but I don't want them there.

If you wish to update the tags in a mp3 (for whatever reason)

select all files you wish to update.

right click on highlighted files

library tools > Update Tags (From Library)

set back and watch, drink a soda or beer

Thanks benn, tried both and no joy.

KS - tried that also and no joy.

There is another thread here with someone having the same problems with FLAC.

I also use DJ software that I pull the music into but I rate everything in MC. When MixMeister imports the music it assigns a default rating of 3 stars to the track. I can confirm through Tag&Rename that the ratings are blank even after going through what you have both suggested.

Thanks again for the input.

<edit>
I also note in dbPowerAmp a rating is not recorded. However there are a number of comments attached to the file including Media Centre, its version and 5, which happens to be the rating of that song. I confirmed this by checking this on other files of various ratings and it follows the rating. Is it possible that MC is not writing the rating to the correct location in the tag?

You may want to check to see if the files are write protected

I tested this out prior to posting and it worked for MP3 files

FYI: there is also a setting in plug-in manager for the mp3 to write id31 and id3v2 tags, i think it is under encoders.

Nope they are not write protected and I can confirm this because MixMiester was able to write additional info to the tag.

Did you see my edit?

they'll be different tags.

MC uses a proprietry tag for [rating] that only it can read, meaning that MixMeister won't be able to read them.

In MC, select a single file, then in the action window, click on file properties, then on 'file type info'. All the tags present in the file should be shown there in a read-only state. You should see "COMM: (rating) 4" or similar in the id3v2 info. That's your MC rating tag.

Oh, thanks Marko that explains it.

So if I understand it correctly, even though id3v2 allows for ratings to be writen to a tag MC perfers to create a custom field for this. Does that sum it up?

MC prefers to create a custom field for this

Actually It Is Stored In A Comment Tag, And You Can Have I Think 256 Of Them, They Can Be Read By Many Taggers Like Helium And Dr. Tag (I think tag And Rename Also)

What ID3v2 field does MixMeister use?

Since there is only five ratings it would be relatively simple to make five playlists or smartlists in MC (one for each rating) and export the playlists in m3u format. Then load the playlists one at a time to MixMeister or some tagger that is compatible with MixMeister and rate the files.

if there is other players out there with other tagging systems and it is a major player, JRiver May wish to allow the fields to be migrated over to MC's tagging. they already do for some fields from some other players.
