Updating technical file info when analyzing audio
« on: July 01, 2006, 04:04:59 pm »

There are some database fields (Sample Rate, Compression (encoding type), Bits, Channels) that were added in a recent version of Media Center. So files imported using previous versions of MC don't have these fields populated. The only way to populate them is to use Library Tools > Update Library (from tags). This can be dangerous if you chose not to synchronize file tags after every change to the library.

Among technical fields, some like Replay Gain, BPM, Peak Level, and Intensity are calculated by Analyze Audio. Others, like Sample Rate, Compression (encoding type), Bits and Channels, are read from the file header and not calculated. So the Analyze Audio function does not update them. I think that it should do, however, because they are technical information about the audio file after all. I don't know if this behavior is correct in all cases, but it should be left as an option.
