ReplayGain and Rockbox
« on: May 14, 2006, 08:37:04 pm »

ReplayGain is working fine inside MC, but not on Rockbox.  This could be a Rockbox bug, but it seems to be working for other rockbox users.

The rockbox forum says the replaygain info needs to be an ID3v2 tag.  I assume that's what MC is generating (not sure how to verify).

Has anyone got any MC-tagged replaygain files to work with Rockbox?

OK, from what I've been able to figure out, Rockbox wants to see the replaygain data in an ID3v2 tag, and (I'm guessing here) Media Center's putting it in an APEv2 tag (which apparently is the standard way/place to do it).

Hopefully rockbox will get more flexible and start reading APEv2 tags, but in the meantime, does anyone know a way to bulk copy an APEv2 tag to an ID3v2 tag?  Or get MC to write the data into an ID3v2 tag?

Assuming I'm right about all of this...

Isn't the problem that Media Center uses its own Replay Gain tags - (MEDIAJUKEBOX:REPLAY GAIN) - and algorithm(?).

When I encode OGG files for my H140 I tend to run VorbisGain on the files afterwards to create the Replay Gain tags that Rockbox is after. There are similar tools for other file formats - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_Gain#Implementations_of_Replay_Gain_scanners

It would be lovely if MC wrote the Replay Gain tags in this format too  ;D

Can anyone at JRiver tell us if this might be in the works?  As I've said before, Rockbox is to iPod software as Media Center is to WMP.  It's painful to see Rockbox and Media Center not on speaking terms with respect to Replay Gain.  It's the only thing missing, and it's a relatively big thing (to me anyway - I don't like large random volume changes on shuffle play).

Is there any hope?
