Ver 8.0.370 CRASHING!!
« on: September 14, 2002, 08:47:16 pm »

While playing music, I get an error message which hangs MJ - I have to go to the task manager to shut it down. The message is:

"Error: Playback Engine: Media Jukebox is unable to acquire license for this file. Windows Media Error: 0x80070020"

Has this been reported yet??

did this occur while playing (or attempting to play) a WMA file?  if so, it's a problem related to WMAs.

Did you install either WMP 9 or WinXP SP1?

Microsoft broke some things somewhere and we thought we had a work-around in build 370.

Try a reboot and a reinstall if you haven't.

I have not installed WMP 9 or XP Service Pack. This also never happened in previous versions of MJ 8 - but I can't tell you when things went sour. It now seems to be repeatable with certain *.wma files. I can send you the music file if you want to duplicate the problem. Otherwise....I'm stumped!
Thanks,

Did you encode the wma files?

I did encode them myself using MJ ver 3 or 4 off a CD (don't remember, but a loooong time ago). Never seen this problem and I know the files have been played many times successfully before this problem.
Thanks for your wonderfully quick response!!

Woops - I went back to duplicate the problem and isolate it to specific files. It seemed to happen alot with an Indigo Girls CD but I could not get it to happen on any particular track. Sometimes it happens and most of the time it doesn't. As far as I can tell, it only happens with *.wma files and that's about all I can say with some certainty.

Microsoft keeps wanting to send an error report when the crash occurs. So whatever this is, it really hangs MJ.

I've got the same problem.  It's only with wma files.  It's pretty inconsistent.

Sometimes, not always, when I play a wma song, I'll get error message:
"Error: Playback Engine: Media Jukebox is unable to acquire license for this file. Windows Media Error: 0x80070020"

If the song is able to begin playing without that error, then the error will happen at the end of the song.  This is always.  I'll get a message that MJ has encountered a problem and has to close./Send message to MSFT?

In the last two weeks, I've installed WMP 9, XP SP1, and MJ 8.0.370.  And today was the first time I tried to play a wma file during this time, so I can't point at one of them.

Also, a few days ago, I lost sound in one speaker.  I think it's a hardware problem, but if anyone can suggest a possible software cause, please let me know.

For what it's worth, I'm having the same crashing problems using version 8.0.370 with WMA files (I used Windows XP as well).  Installing WMP 9.0 doesn't seem to have any affect on the problem, as it is happening with two different computers, one on which I installed (and then removed) WMP and the other that has WMP 8 on it.

I'm not sure how WMP affects MJ, but if it happens to me (and I don't have WMP at all), then it's probably unrelated to this problem.

I am glad to hear that I'm not the only one getting these particular crashes.
