Several upgrade questions
« on: July 15, 2006, 01:28:53 pm »

I've just built a new computer, and would like to transfer my MC10 over to it AND upgrade to 11.1 at the same time.

  • I see that I need to install MC10 on the new machine first in order to get the upgrade price for MC11.1.  Is a vanilla clean install with my license enough, or should I get my entire library transferred over as well before upgrading to 11.1?
  • Is there a recommended way to transfer the library?  Backup/Restore?
  • Any issues running MC11.1 on XP Pro x64?
  • Any other issues/etc I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Make Sure You Make A Backup Of Your Library Files First Before Upgrading.

I have Never Had Much Luck On Upgrading And Retaining It Or Play Lists, I Also Tend Not To Make Backups Of My Library Files.

There May Be Issues With MC And Windows Vista (Volume Control For one)

One thing I'm REALLY not very clear on: what, exactly, do I transfer to the new machine?

I just backed up my library.  It took about a second, and I got a .zip file 325KB in size.  My library is more than 58GB.

Obviously the backup is an index, and I have to transfer both the backup file and the library itself to the new machine - does the restore function know how to get the real library, somehow?

thanks....

Huh.  Well, that was easy - all I did was transfer all my music files over, and resinstalled MC - it found it all on its own.  Not bad!

Just so you are aware... Whenever MC refers to the "Library" it is referring to the database of your media, not the media itself!  It's a quite important distinction.
