Very strange, must be some sort of setting change or install issue, I guess.  Becuase it never works for me no matter what songs I click on in any view, it just does nothing.

I can confirm jgreen's comments. While checking it out, I did come across another bug though:

I have a playlist group selected, it's called 'Audio' and, oddly enough, it has a load of audio related smart/play lists inside.

I right click on the playlist group called Datdudes playlists, and select 'delete'
The prompt asks me if I really want to delete the 'audio' playlist group!!

In Playing Now in Action Window, with Noire skin, currently playing track has no highlight, as it did under 11.x and earlier versions.  Has this feature been removed?

What do you mean by highlight?  Mine is just bolded.
