(Glynor started it.)

I spent this hot Sunday afternoon putting in some stone steps down to the garden. It's 5:30 now and I just made myself a gin and tonic. Boy, is it good!

By the way, in the US, we make them with a slice of lime. In the UK, it comes with a slice of lemon. It isn't the same drink. I'm lucky I live in the U.S., I guess.

Any other favorites for the end of a hot summer day?

While my general summertime favorite is a good bottle of nice, lightly chilled white wine, this weekend we actually were drinking something a bit different (and quite good).

Rum Punch (mentioned here)
------------

2 cups Rum (works well with 50% light and 50% dark if you have it)
1.5 cups Pineapple Juice
1.5 cups Orange Juice
1/2 - 3/4 cup Lime Juice (non-sweetened)
3 tablespoons (about 1 oz) Grenadine
splash of tequilla (only if you have good stuff)

shake well. chill deeply. float orange slices if you have them before serving.

Simply fantastic. And the best part is that somehow (maybe all the vitamin C and hydrating juices), it doesn't seem to cause bad hangovers the next day!! (Trust me, I'd know... I've had enough of it this weekend!)

Not Done Yet, They Were To Put New Carpet Down In the Living Room (Another $900 Or So) And Linoleum In the Bath Room, But The Carpet People Had A Installer Quit So It Got Delayed Till Wen&Thu Of This Week.

The Old Tub Was Some Huge garden Tub That we Only Used To Fill With Water When A Hurricane Is Coming. Only Used It Once Took Too Much Water It Was In the House When We Bought It 12+ Years Ago.

This Tub Is A Bit Wider And Deeper Than A Normal Tub.

The Dogs Keep Digging Holes In The Living Room Carpet, I Think To Bury Bones. The Only Get Down 1 Inch And Hit Plywood. I Am Thinking About De-clawing Them, It Maybe Cheaper.

So it Is Still Ongoing

In these hot times (yes, actually it has been a incredible hot summer here in Oslo, Norway this year), my favorite drink is the following:

1. Couple pounds of malt
2. Lots of water
3. A glass or two of hops.
4. Some good yeast.

Stir and wait 4-6 weeks. The best beer is home brewed beer!

Or if i am really thirsty, i go for a good, cold Grolch in the fridge

A drink I might make some times, is:

Crushed ice in a glass
1/3 Vodka
1/3 Lemon power drink
1/3 Orange juice (a type with chunks in it)

Sitting here with my G&T (with lemon). Nice. Agree with Jim about the limes but I need mine for the Corona Ive got chilling in the fridge

. And for gin connoisseurs the best in the whole world is Millers. Jim - get some in - you wont regret it.

My personal favourite is probably a mojito, but THE summer drink is of course Pimm's. Its mandatory for English summer lawns. Delicious!

Gotta disagree with you there. I get a horrible cucumber taste from Millers that just doesn't belong in a gin. And it makes rotten Martinis. For me the best gin is Tanqueray Ten. Fantastic with tonic and lemon or lime and amazing when stirred with ice and a splash of Noilly Prat then strained into a cocktail glass with a couple of olives....

When I lived in Germany I used to drink 'apfelsaftschorlen' during the summer, and it's still my favourite non-alcoholic summer drink ever. It's just apple juice with sparkling water; about 3:2 water:juice, and it's the most refreshing drink you can have; dry, sharp and ice-cold!

Concur

i developed a new appreciation for martinis when i had them with gin instead of vodka.

Can’t believe no one mentioned the most popular drink in the world, a margarita.

However for hot summer days a margarita swirl is great.

Ice, 100% agave Tequila, a proper orange liqueur and a dash or orange juice then a good lime margarita mix, put in a blender until smooth and thick, then add some cold sangria wine and mix in a swirl pattern.

Did you know most all popular tequilas like Jose Cuervo are 49% Vodka?

I was under the impression that most mixto tequilas (including those of the Cuervo line) are 49% sugar cane based, which would put it closer to Puerto Rican Rum (rather than the grain base of most Vodkas). Others (usually slightly superior brands) are 49% maize based....

BTW.... When I said "good" tequila up above, I certainly wasn't referring to Cuervo ones. Patron Silver (or Añejo if someone else is buying) is my personal favorite, but for a cheaper bottle, I'm partial to Sauza Hornitos (which is also 100%).

Margaritas are certainly good, but I'm partial to sipping tequila.

Not sure where you got your G&T but all the places I have been (and my misses) make it with lime.

I don't know, but I learned the hard way that lemonade in the U.K. is not the same thing as lemonade here across the pond. Theirs is more like Sprite.

One of my favorites (and I haven't tried it for a while):

1/2 lemonade or sprite or 7 up or some lemony drink and 1/2 beer.

The original is made using "Clara", a spanish lemonade drink.

Take 20 Lemons You Should Get 3 Cups Of Juice From Them

1 Gal Of Water

2 Cups Of Sugar Or (10 Packs Of Sweet And Low And 20 Packs Of Equal).

If your Using Diet Sweeteners And Mixing Drinks In A Blender You Really need To Add A Bit Of Sugar. Because It Will Not Mix Correctly With Ice In A Blender Without Sugar.

lemonade is pretty much the same everywhere. It's what you made before fizzy drinks were invented and to some degree it still beats them i think (for a summertime drink)

..or was it part a brand name like x cola ?

in which case i'm not sure what to call home made lemonade.

King's closest.

For those who have been to a fair in the US, you've seen (likely drank) them.
A big glass tumbler. Quartered lemons squeezed into it, sugar, and ice in the tumbler. They add ice water, put a paper or plastic cup over the top and shake.

If you add a suitable amount of even cheap vodka to the mix it is quite nice. Suitable is in the eye of the beholder. My brother thinks 250 ml is good for example.

Having made those through 20 states and countless fairs when I was a carny for a couple of years, I still love 'em. Slicing box after box of lemons is a different matter...

Canned or powdered lemonade is ok, but not my favorite. Especially as an adult beverage.

White wine and Sprite (40/60) was a very nice drink when I last tasted it a couple years ago. Also rosé wine and Sprite works.

Red wine and coke = tastes exactly like a traditional swedish christmas drink called "Julmust", but then it's not a summer drink... :-)

I stuck to vino this weekend, but we did have a couple of great summer ones...

First off, I had a very nice Riesling from Alsace (France). Most people think of Rieslings as sticky sweet concoctions (like the bane of the grape, Liebfrauenmilch), but many of those varietals from Alsace are delightful and dry. Definitely perfect for a hot summer evening!

For a bit cheaper, but easy drinking alternative, we also had two very nice "everyday" wines that are worth checking out if you haven't before: Black Swan Chardonnay-Semillon (Australia) and Clos du Bois Sauvignon Blanc (Sonoma, California).

This practice is strictly verboten in any wine drinking country. I suppose its ok if you try it with the competition's

Fairly bad.... One thing I didn't mention in my above post was a fourth bottle we had this weekend (a chard I think) that was so terrible we had to mix it with OJ and seltzer to make it drinkable (sort of a crappy wine mimosa). Even then it was only really drinkable because we had already had 3 other bottles. I think it was a NY wine actually...

Though not Bully Hill. Mmmmm... Bully Hill. Love my goat.
