What's with TV in MC 12?
« on: August 10, 2006, 08:36:16 pm »

I followed the instructions to get TV working in MC12 (build 12.0.53).

1. Install a TV tuner card in your computer. Currently Media Center supports ATI and Hauppauge tuner cards.
ATI ALL-IN-WONDER cards
ATI TV Wonder (PCI and USB) and ATI HDTV cards
http://www.ati.com
Hauppauge WinTV PCI or USB and WinTV-PVR 150/250/350
(except for digital TV models)
http://www.hauppauge.com
2. Connect an input feed to the tuner card. This can be an antenna or cable connection.
3. In Media Center, select the "TV Tuner" item.
4. Set up TV channels by first selecting "Options" then, on the TV Channels tab, choose "Analog" or "Digital" (if you have a digital tuner). Then select "Scan for channels".
5. When scanning has finished, exit the dialog windows by clicking the "OK" button. Media Center will list the channels available.
6. Select a channel to watch by double clicking it.

I don't come any further than 4.
When I select 'Options' I'm asked to choose an analog device (I have Hauppauge PVR350 and Hauppauge PVR USB2 installed), country, tv-tuner input type, mixer device and audio line.
After providing this information and a final 'OK' a window appears saying 'Starting TV' and then 'Failed to play TV'.
So no TV Channels tab under 'Options', no "Analog' or 'Digital' and no 'Scan for channels'.
In MC11 all works fine.
What am I doing wrong?

Almost sounds like a driver issue.  Make sure you have the latest drivers and then try uninstalling and reinstalling.  Failed to start TV happened to me lots many years back when I forgot to install drivers.

That can't be!! Why is TV working alright then in MC 11?
And why isn't MC 12 reacting then as explained in 'How to watch broadcast or cable TV with MC' when I select the TV tuner item? Ofcourse TV failes to play in MC 12 because (as I explained in my previous post) MC 12 doesn't even come up with the option to scan channels.

When I select 'Options' I'm asked to choose an analog device (I have Hauppauge PVR350 and Hauppauge PVR USB2 installed), country, tv-tuner input type, mixer device and audio line.

Although this is unlikely to be the reason for your trouble, I would just point out that for the two Hauppauge devices you have, you should unckeck the "This device requires a cable to route sound to the sound card" checkbox, and therefore would not choose a mixer device and an audio line.

Both devices work fine on my computer with both MC11 and MC12.

I have unchecked the "This device requires a cable to route sound to the sound card".
Please can you tell me how to make a log file.

Please can you tell me how to make a log file.

Before running TV, go to Help->Logging...

Check "Output to a log file" under Logging Options.
Check "Playback" and "TV" (uncheck everything else) under "Types of events to log"

Click OK.

Now try running TV.

After the failure, go back to Help->Logging... and click "Click to view current log file" and copy and paste log data from there. Alternatively you can get the log file here:

"C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\J River\Media Center 12\log.txt"

Zip the file before attaching to the email because some mail servers would mess up the txt file attachment.

Thanks. I have emailed you the log file.

The log shows that Options started, and quit. Nothing else. Not much help there.  :(

Please try Reset TV. Tools->Options->Playback->TV->Reset TV...

If that does not help, try uninstalling and reinstalling MC.

I just have sent you my e-mail again.

Got it this time. Unfortunately it is no help either. Nothing unusual shows up in the screen shots.

There is really not any significant changes in TV component from MC11 to 12 (you are still able to use TV in MC11 right?).

Can you send me another log file, this time with all logging types enabled (not just TV and Playback, but all). I will look into it on Monday.

Nothing unusual you say. But why doesn't MC12 ask then to scan channels. Does MC12 uses the TV setup from MC11? I don't think so.
TV works fine in MC11.
I'll sent you another logfile.

By "nothing unusual" I meant nothing unusual by looking at the screen shots. The window that appeared behind the window that asked you to select analog video device is most likely just "Please wait. Starting TV...".

I know something did not go right on your machine. The Options dialog crashed on your earlier tries. On your latest tries MC crashed even earlier, before you clicked Options button (right?).

Are you still able to run TV in MC11 after all these happened in MC12?

MC12 uses its own settings, independent of MC11.

I am guessing there is something wrong with the latest MC12 installation. Maybe you can try rolling back to an earlier version.

Have you tried rebooting the computer?
