MC still slow
« on: August 21, 2006, 11:30:26 pm »

I'm still seeing some major slowdown problems when in my images viewscheme.
The viewscheme contains about 20,000 images. But, they are all tiny images (font previews and clip art etc.) so it's only 700mb of physical space.
I have done a "Build thumbnails" and it says it has finished building them.

When I try to scroll through a filtered list (about 6000 files) MC constantly freezes and then recovers a few seconds later.

Also, saving tag changes is taking a really long time. About half an hour to tag 600 files. You have time to see it counting down through each file.

Could it just be that there are too many files in the viewscheme?

Below is my system info:

How many images are you putting on the screen at once?  Does switching thumbnail sizes make much of a difference?

Is Windows on a fast drive, and have you defragmented lately?

Does it only apply when you first start the program, or in certain cases?

Once you scroll awhile, do the lags stop?  Are there any images that don't show a thumbnail?

Could you try disabling your virus checker.  Sometimes they mangle all disk I/O.

With a computer as fast as yours, thumbnail views should be sillky no matter how many images they have.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Matt,

I'll test again tomorrow, but here's what i can think of now:

Maybe about 50-80 images on screen at once.

Only really happens in my images viewscheme, and only when scrolling through a list of font previews (6000 small jpegs files)

I find that i can scroll smoothly for a while then it sticks, and then after about 10 seconds everything is smooth again and i can scroll smoothly for another few seconds before it sticks again.
I remember having similar problems in my video viewscheme when it was building thumbnails.

I'm just thinking now that all of those images are on a terastation on a gigabit network. I'll try testing the same images on a usb drive if i have time tomorrrow.
