Cover Art

We're thinking about adding cover art to our YADB database.  If we did, how would you feel about uploading your cover art to populate it?  Do you have good quality images?

It depends on what you mean by good quality.
What size(s) are you looking for?
Do you just want the front cover?

I've got about 1200 albums I'd be willing to upload.
More than half are 300x300.
The rest are 200x200.

I'd want the search to fall back on amazon.com or walmart.com for images not available via YADB.

I only have about 600 albums ripped so far, but am happy to upload cover art.

Would this be automated through MC as mine is stored in the file (ape format)?

Sounds a fantastic idea!  ;D
I'd happily upload coverart.
I've only got about 260 albums though.
Ideally I think YADB would upload a small image,
and then if a bigger image was uploaded at a later
date this would also be uploaded, to replace the image.

Maybe some arrangement could be arranged with Kingsparta,
for all the coverart on his server?  :)

i have found many users may have the wrong cover art attached to there music, it may be the correct artist but the wrong album.

So there should be a way to correct it or delete it.

Sounds groovy to me too.

For maximum chances of finding some art (often, even a tiny image is better than nothing at all), I would allow all art to be uploaded, and have the app intelligently choose the biggest one for you when batch downloading.

Keeping the "loose search" feature would be good too.

I know that when I've shown MC to people, they've been impressed by the way you can navigate by art, but then put off when they found out how difficult it was to aquire that art themselves. This one step process would be a killer feature for most people I think.
I've spent a long time, using MC, Sparta's plugin, and Google images to get all my art. Just over 500 albums have art at or above 500x500px. Another 500 or so at about 300x300px. And another 400 at smaller than 300x300px.

Happy to upload it of course.

I could provide about 2000 front covers. In general the sizes vary from 300x300 to 800x800. I have named the files as "Album Artist (auto) - Album".

Are you thinking about adding an internal mechanism for uploading the files? Otherwise users may have difficulties in participating, especially if they use the folder.jpg naming system.

You could add a separate cover art database to MC's library (like the CD or deleted files database is now). It would initially gather the needed information from the audio files' library fields and after that it would be synchronized with the media files. Hopefully this would also make possible to add the much requested "move" cover art option and functions for mass extracting or embedding cover art from/into file tags and resizing for portable players.

Yes, we'd do something to automate it.

I absolutely would be glad to upload my cover art. I always try to get the largest and clearest there is.

But while you're at it, how about adding Lyrics to the YADB database too since King's unsure if he's going to update his Lyrics Finder plug-in for MC 12?  A lot of people have contributed to his lyrics database so it would be nice to have some place to continue the same with MC 12.

I have 1260 albums all with cover art.
However, it's all 200x200 and that's be design.

I think adding it to Yadb, is going to be tricky. Everybody uses different sizes....

I have over 18,000 albums, all with cover art images.... mostly are 300x300 and 500x500.
Isn't there any legality issue on uploading them to a server though?

Maybe

It may not beings the art is not actually displayed on a web site.

As King mentioned previously some people upload incorrect cover art. In this case and to handle the multiple size issue, the user should have the ability to select from multiple cover art, if there is more than one.

This should not be an issue if

the largest image size was archived, and then resized per the users cover art setting

on recept of the image it can be resized by MC

Or it could be resized on demand from the server prior to download, and this is how amazon does it.

With Amazons server you can get the server to return 150x150, 300x300 or 500x500 from amazon.

not all art on amazon will return all sizes but most will

I've noticed often when on Amazon's web, if I click on show larger image (on an album cover) it gives the same size image embedded in a big white border.  So the whole thing is larger, but it did not stretch, it simply surrounded the image with extra white padding.  Strange behavior.

I'd be more than happy to upload what I've got. Currently, I search for it on Google Images, and then grab the biggest one I can find. They're pretty much all over the place from over 1000x1000 to 200x200.

Would we get to pick and choose which art to upload? Because in some rare cases, I was unable to locate any for a particular album so I used some place holder iamge , or, in the case of TV jingles or something, just used a screenshot of the opening title of the show.
