Move Library (and files)
« on: August 26, 2006, 05:14:41 pm »

I've been reading the posts about all the different ways to (and problems of) moving and renaming files. I'm totally confused now. I simply want to move ALL my ripped music from Drive C: to Drive D:, maintain the same file/directory structure and have MC update the library and playlists to reflect the change. I already tried the library "copy" function, but it didn't maintain the sub-directory structure.

What's the simplest and most foolproof way to do this??

This is simple:

- Select all files
- Use this tool: Tools > Library Tools > Find and Replace...
- Tick: "Filename (path)" only
- Find what: C:\
- Replace: D:\

This makes it foolproof:

Backup the library and the media files and try a few files first.

Got the music moved over. How do I do the same for the cover art? The tag info for each track still shows the original location. And, the cover art is still in place on the original drive.

Sorry - I know these are basic/newbie questions for you guys...

P.S. All the coverart is together in a specified location C:\Music\Coverart\

i would have suggested a mere drag & drop using the tree instead, everything in the album folders incld, the album art would have moved, including updating of playlists in one go. Once the move completes, a dialog pops up asking you whether to confirm the new changes, say Yes.

And finally, hit refresh (F5) whilst in the tree to show the new changes.

This only affects newly created art. Not the location of the art already associated with the currently ripped CD's. :(

1.  Move the art using explorer.
2.  Choose the folder in MC's tools/options/File locations.
3.  Select files and right click to choose image/quick find in cover art folder.

Worked like a charm! Any plans to incorporate a full "library move" option in MC12? Seems like a common need.

Thanks Jim!
