slow CD players

I just discovered that my XP box is having ripping problems because it has a 16x cdrom in it and it rips painfully slow.  so slow that the computer appears to be locked.  And for practical purposes it is locked.

Is their anyway to tell the RIPability of my CDROM without waiting to see if MJ boggs down?  Can that be a feature of MJ?
