Library Server slow (dont know which end)
« on: August 21, 2006, 07:36:01 am »

Local LAN -- Library server is very slow -- Up to 42 seconds to send next file in a library that cross-fades with an 11.x build.   (~95,000 test files).

I killed Watch Folders (it was taking the processor to 100%).   Server is running on a RAID5 SATA II array, with 2G RAM ... should be fine, but it isn't!  (This has been a common complaint, so I would bet its being worked on at this time)

I've killed virusscanner (but I also confirmed it isnt scanning any of the MP3s sent).   Anyone know why the lag in-between songs?

If others arent experiencing this, I will open my library up for a select group so they can test .. I have a decent uplink speed :) ....

Going to Vegas now for 5 days ... King, I'm betting 1$ in the big slots for you!  You rock!

And, secondly, I will have lots to do when I get back ... so, make sure you have gone through a few revisions before I get back (tongue-in-cheek) ...

Later guys - wish me luck ... I have to pay for this new licensing somehow ;)

What format is the music? Or is it video?

John,

I've experienced the same problem with library server, although I only first noticed it over the weekend and then it seemed to go away so I thought no more of it.

Then last night I played an album and there was a gap of 45 seconds between each track again. (Have MC set to .5 second gap)

Did some looking and the album was made up of MP3 files (most of my files are .ape), further testing shows that  it's the MP3 files that are doing it.

Skipping to the next track works fine, but there is a big delay if just playing straight through with MP3 files.

Did you encode these files yourself? What options and encoder did you use?

Yes and No, some I encoded myself using MC11 (Lame encoder VBR at approx 84kbps) some I downloaded from "The Airmen Of Note"  website (CBR 192kbps and also VBR 200-210kbps), all seem exibit the same problem.

One more thing,

If while MC12 is in the 45 second "wait" before starting the next track I press Nex/Skip track playback starts immediately.

Any progress on this?

.60 still has the same problem.

As a test I disabled all anti virus and firewalls on both machines but this had no affect on the problem.

Can't test V11 server with V12 client as DB is detected as different versions.

OK on further testing I've also found that .ape files with NO cover art also exhibit the same problems.

So I have MP3 files with or without cover art and APE files WITHOUT cover art giving the pause between tracks.

APE files WITH cover art seem to play OK in testing thus far.

Drosoph, does this match your findings?
