CD ripping problems.
« on: August 25, 2006, 04:07:29 am »

--------
auto rip is not working.
Insert another cd for ripping, nothing happens.
In the action window, click "click here to restart ripping" always returns the following dialogue:

clicking retry always respawns the dialogue. Clicking cancel, and then clicking on "click here to restart ripping" again, restarts ripping.
(this one, and the [disc #] bug below are a pain to keep testing, so, I'll leave these in until I see a related change in the changelog)
--------
[disc #] field is being auto-filled:
When ripping a cd that already exists in the cd\dvd database, MC is automatically tagging [disc #]==1. This is also being written to the cd\dvd database.
--------

EDIT:
Snipped out the irrelavent stuff and changed the topic title to suit.

Command line stuff
mc12.exe "/playreplace TREEPATH=Playlists\viewscheme groups\Logitech\preset1"
The string above works fine if MC is running. If MC is closed, the string launches MC, but does nothing else.
v11.1 would launch and begin playback.

Next build.

This seems to work just peachy for me.  Is it still broken?

This seems to work just peachy for me.  Is it still broken?
For me it is, yes. no change in behaviour at all.
It's now ripping the second cd after I followed the steps I outlined above. 'Drives and Devices' is still open in the tree, but not selected. selection has auto-jumped to 'recently ripped, as expected. The point is, that although the second disc is ripping, and using the correct info for the rip, the volume name displayed in 'drives and devices' is still that of the first cd.
Also, just for confirmation, am I correct in presumption that upon inserting the second cd, MC should start ripping it right away, without me needing to click anything at all?
Generally, I rip to .flac (thanks schtom), but can confirm that ripping to .ape returns the exact same results.

The [disc #] bug I reported above is still present too, and is quite annoying as I use a [disc #] expression in my directory naming rules, for both ripping and rename from props. [disc #] gets populated with 1 as soon as I choose 'rip cd' from anywhere. Before actually clicking on the rip button, I make the [disc #] field empty, but as soon as I click the rip button, MC fills it with ones again!

Not sure if it will be any help to you or not, but here's my ageing system info...

I'm only using drive Q in these tests.
I don't have any aspi drivers installed (though I do have nero burning rom installed)
Not this time, but previously, I tried with secure rip settings, and still, no auto rip there either.

These are cumbersome tests to keep repeating blindly. If there's anything specific you would like me to try, just let me know.

Yeah.  In fact that is what I was doing.  I would pop one disc out and then stuff the next in.  Rip city, baby.  Windows might pop up a dialog but MC should start ripping right away.  (Well, relatively right away.)  I was even using secure ripping.

You have to set a bunch of things.  Like enable auto rip, then tell it to auto rip when a new cd is put in.  Seems to me I always set something else but I'm not sure I need to.

What are your rip settings?  What codec?

Edit: I see you said FLAC above.  Did you test APE?

nah, I tried already.
Is there any point trying to install aspi drivers?
I notice that " wowexec" is running in the process list after trying these things out, but didn't notice if it was running beforehand. Is that relavent at all?

Please try the next build (12.0.68 or greater) to see if there is improvement. I fixed a bug with recognizing newly inserted CD's, but I couldn't exactly duplicate what you described so I can't be sure it fixed the problem you are seeing.

Thanks,

1st impressions are not good with this build.

MC is open, I insert a disc and click 'rip cd' in the AW. MC lists the cd correctly, along with the game DVD I have in the other drive, (oh how I wish MC wouldn't persist in catalogueing those discs), anyhow, it's a 9 track CD (Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms) and MC has ticks in all 9 tracks, but the AW proclaims "1 file - 5:12"

I click the rip button anyway, MC immediately populates the [disc #] field with 1 (am I really the only one seeing this?) and proceeds with the rip, and indeed, only rips one track, then spits the disc out. i put another one in, and nothing happens.

I'm now going to try out some other things.
I have autorun disabled here, also, internally, MC is set to do nothing upon insertion of both audio cds and dvds. A bit of a pain, but I'll mess with these settings right now and get back to you....

OK, rebooted PC.
The audio disc was still in the drive when MC started, and I've not seen a re-occurrance of the "all files ticked for ripping, but only one actually in the rip Q" peculiarity.

Overall, there is no change at all in the steps I outlined at the top of the first post here.

I set MC to play audio cds on insert, but it's not doing so...

I tried ripping another two cds (that's another two cd's I have to clear the [disc #] field for) and this time, I kept the log file open, and bookmarked each step. I'm not sure if they'll be visible, so I've added comments after closing MC, look for lines starting >>>,
or check lines: 274, 406, 970, 972, 978, 981, 984 and 1477.

I do not know if it will be any help or not, but as it won't fit here, there's a zipped copy here.
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to try.

I have seen it too but just figured that's one of the changes they made instead of leaving the Disk # field blank and have come to accept it. I used to use the field only for multi-disc CDs but I guess it doesn't bother me then having it set to 1 for the single disc CDs.

to me this is a bug.
I have the cds in the cd\dvd database, [disc #] is empty, as soon as I click to rip, MC is updating that database. It's messing with my rename from properties rules, my ripped file location rules, my "where is it" view scheme has become corrupted by this unwanted field population, requiring that I go in and undo MC's automatic field population to fix things. This is not the way I'm used to MC behaving. please, don't tell me this is by design.... ??

I think I've fixed the bug where the "Click here to restart ripping" button didn't work. Please try the next build (69?) when it comes out. Thanks for providing the log file.

Yes, it should ensure that you don't ever see the tags from a previous CD. The problem was that with auto-run disabled there were cases where the CD volume was not getting refreshed.

"click here to restart ripping" confirmed as working.
[disc #] field being auto-populated confirmed as fixed.

Thank you.

Final quick question:
Does auto-run need to be enabled for ripping to continue without clicking the 'restart' text?

Sorry to inform that the "rip refresh bug" is still alive and kicking here. Using build 12.0.70. My drive has autorun disabled, if that matters.
No way to get rid of the information of the first CD ripped.

Darn! I didn't want to hear that.
Even if you hit F5 while viewing the CD it doesn't refresh?

No, it does not. I tried hitting F5, the refresh icon on the toolbar next to the title in the detail view, collapsing and expanding the tree... unfortunately, the info on the first CD is always there, John  :-\

Could you send me a debug log file after this happens? Probably check all the logging event options. Possibly after I see it I'll have to add some more logging information and have you try it again.
Thanks for helping out on this. We'll get it fixed.

OK, I'll try to do it tonight.

Is it OK if I do the following?:

1.- Enable debugging.
2.- Insert a CD (CD 1) that MC will recognize. Not rip it.
3.- Eject CD 1.
4.- Insert CD 2 that I know MC will not recognize.
5.- Lookup tagging info using another tool ("the player") that writes to cdplayer.ini
6.- Update info "from database" for CD 2. It will not be found and MC will suggest to update from local database.
7.- Update info from cdplayer.ini for CD 2
8.- Realizing that the info retrieved is the one for CD 1 instead of CD 2.
9.- Send you the log  ;D

OK John, I have the log file. I've zipped into a zip file of 64 KB. Where do I send it?

Just for clarification, the concerned drive is letter D which has autorun disabled. Also, autorip in MC is disabled. I mistakenly opened the drive H in the process, so you'll probably find some references of that in the log file.

I'm cpying here my system info in case it is relevant:

Let me know If I can be of any further assistance with this.

Thanks for your help.
