Crashing too often - is it just me?
« on: September 11, 2002, 10:20:12 am »

Just installed Media Jukebox 8.0.365 last night, and it has already crashed 3 times. First time within 5 minutes -- not a good feeling!

It seems like a great program, and I love the organizational features. However, crashing this frequently makes it a no-no on my system. The last crash completely locked up my system, even task manager would not end the process.

I don't know what I am doing to cause it, except that for now I have simply been editing tags, perhaps that it the problem area.

I am running Windows XP SP1, newly installed just last week.

Maybe v9 could keep a stack trace and forward it to JRiver automatically when it recovers from a crash - that way you could see what activities most often lead to crashes?

It's likely that these problems were introduced by the new Microsoft software, but it's worth trying build 369 just out here.  It fixed a CD drive problem.

Mine also crashes a lot.
For example, when I put in an audio CD, Media Jukebox opens, and then gives me an error message and immediately closes down again.  Also, when I finish burning a CD and I put the CD back in to check if it works, it makes my whole system crash.

One other odd thing--when I put a blank CD in to burn, the whole program freaks out a little bit, and continues to do so during the entire burning process.  By freaking out, I mean that the tree randomly selects and opens different branches (usually the CD audio and TV tuner options) and it also randomly selects from among whatever windows I have open.  Weird.  Does anyone know why this happens and/or how to fix it?  I run Windows 98SE on an IBM Thinkpad--the CD-RW drive is a removable one that goes in the "Ultrabay 2000" slot.

Help!!

I tend to believe this has something to do with WMP 9.0.  I'm having constant crashing problems, with every version of Media Jukebox (I'm now using the latest 8.0 version, but tried 9.0 beta as well).  Only since installing Windows Media 9.0 has this been the case, and it continues even after uninstalling WMP.  I'm using XP.

To uninstall WMP 9 beta, at least on XP, you need to do a System Restore, there is no uninstaller. Look under Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore. System Restore is enabled by default (Control Panel | System | System Restore) but if you have disabled it, I don't know how to get rid of the WMP beta. Be careful running System Restore, you can easily uninstall things you don't intend to uninstall. Also, just to repeat, I don't have WMP 9 Beta installed, and still have the crash problems, although mine seem to be happening when I am doing a lot of tag editing.

Jim -- thanks, I will look into getting the latest release tomorrow, it's late now....

I too have had big prob's with 8.0.365 ... Crashing all the time, using up all my memory so that no other software has even enough memory avail to open them, playing songs from CD one minute then locking up & having to re-boot all the time.

I would've thought by now that we would have a vitual bug free MJ & that would've been a priority before too much expertise was drained away for work on the new Version 9.  Can we please get Version 8 right first?

Rusty,
There are a lot of possible reasons for crashes.  Most of those possibilites are OS or hardware related.  In this case, there are several people above who have installed new Microsoft software.  Occasionally Microsoft releases software with bugs.

We will look into this further.

We cannot reproduce the problem.

Please help us by answering following questions.

1. What is your System Info.
2. Do you have Windows Media Player 9 installed?
3. Did you install Windows XP SP 1?
4. What type of files are you playing when the crash occurred?
5. Did you try latest build 8.0.369?

Thank you in advance,

FWIW, I am running XP SP1, installed WMP9 the day it came out, and have had no problems with MJ. I haven't added the last update since it doesn't affect me.

However, I have finished all my ripping - so don't exercise that area.

I haven't installed WMP9, so issues I report are not related to that.  Maybe it would be useful to add a line to 'System Info' that tells you whether WMP9 is installed?

I too began having problems with MJ after installing new MS software. I'm pretty sure that I had the problems after WMP 9.0 but BEFORE XP SP1.

My main problem is this: When I try to edit the tags of WMA files I get the error: 'MJ can't update these tags; because Read Only or in use, etc.'

I DID NOTICE THIS: THAT SINCE WMP 9 THE READ-ONLY CHECKS/UNCHECKS WON'T STICK IN MY MUSIC FOLDERS.

Thanks. Love MJ. Sure it'll work out.

Sorry, one more point:

I have NO TROUBLE at all with tagging MP3 files, only WMA files.

Thanks.
