iPod (Nano) Volume Adjustment in MC11.1.71
« on: December 02, 2005, 04:27:22 am »

In this release the Volume Adjustment option (right click on iPod icon) has changed.
The release notes are too short to fully understand how it works now.

I will write some statements on how I think it works now.
It would be nice if people would comment on that.

> All songs need to be analyzed in MC otherwise replay gain does not work.
> In general using Replay Gain the overall volume goes down.
> In MC this can be corrected by adding a fixed or playlist dependent Db amount.
> This correction does not affect the volume on the iPod
> Soundcheck (on the iPod) only works with analyzed songs.
> Soundcheck makes all songs play at the same volume.
> The Volume Adjustment does not work in combination with Soundcheck switched on.

My main question:
How can I use Replay Gain settings and adjust the overall volume on the iPod?

Not quite. More accurately..otherwise soundcheck when enabled on iPod will not work on the unanalyzed files.

Proabably.

If you are talking about using the right click 'Volume Adjustment' option to do this, the answer is no because in my testing I found that the volume adjustment was ignored on iPod when the soundcheck feature was enabled.

The 'Volume Adjustment' change definitely affects the volume on iPod but only if soundcheck is disabled.

Yes.

It depends. If the tracks are analyzed in MC and have a replay gain setting, that setting is transferred to iPod and if Soundcheck is enabled, then the replay gain will be applied so files will play at the same volume.

Correct to the best of my knowledge at this point. I will continue to verify this.

These two appear to be mutually exclusive. I will test more.

I hope you will find something to make both possible at the same time.
I will be checking the new releases.   ;)

FYI, I confirmed that everything I said in the previous note is true. Becuase of this I am not sure of a way to have both apply simultaneously.

Would it be possible to use the volume adjustment together with the sound check on? The european owners of ipod have been really screwed by this IPOD volume limit.
Thare are tools out like volumeboosters http://volumebooster.tangerine-soft.de/ that update the replay gain for each song on ipod after it has been uploaded.

Could this not be done with Music Center and the Volume adjustement? After a song has been uploaded, the replay gain transfered to IPOD should just be increased by the volument adjustment chosen ....
This would really be a great feature of Media Center!!!

Cheers
