I can not reproduce this. Conversion works fine on my machine. It obviously did not work on your machine as your mp3 file linked above could not be played (not just distorted, but not playable).

What audio decoder filter do you use for m4a/aac?

Hmmm.... not entirely sure.  Tell me where I can see that info on my system and I'll check it out.

Your log file is missing a lot of information. You should uninstall MC, and then reinstall it.

Ok, I uninstalled (left the registry entries and library).
Reinstalled.

I then installed a newer version of ffdshow (2006-08-21).
Started MC and played the m4a file again.

Still not right. Please try uninstall, removing all registry entries (you can leave your library).

By the way, when you play a m4a file, do you see the spectrum analyzer in the "Current File" window or visualization?

Playback logging should have been enabled. zxsix said so:

Regardless whether using DirectShow or QT, the following line should have appeared in the log:

A while back some one had similar problem while trying to play dts files. Uninstall and reinstall solved it.

I then had a look under Tools > Options > Playback > Directshow audio/video settings
M4A is in the "use directshow" column.
I highlighted it and clicked the Select Filters button.
Under the "currently selected" area, there was nothing showing.
I checked the box for ffdshow audio decoder.

This is nutty.

You log file still is missing logging entries from PlaybackEng. But the playback behavior seems to be correct. What are the "File version" and "Date Created" of the file PlaybackEng.dll in MC12 installation folder?

Try regsiter that file (regsrv32 "C:\......\PlaybackEng.dll").

Does "Creative AC3 Source" filter handle AAC files? It does not sound right. Can you try "MP4 Source filter" instead?

I cleared all of the filters showing for .m4a in the directshow settings.
Played the track again.

When you're not using DirectShow filters to play M4A, MC will use the Quicktime engine.  In that case, no conversion would be possible.

You may have found a problem with a Directshow filter.

I couldn't say, but I'm just saying that you might take a closer look at the Directshow filters you're using.

Did you configure FFDShow decoder to do some other processing? If so, try turning them off.

I updated to a newer build of ffdshow (dated 9/1/06).
Plays and converts to mp3 properly without the distortion now.
I'll consider it case closed.  Thanks for the help.
If you'd like me to do any more testing on this let me know, otherwise I'll drop it.

I think I found a possible cause:

You may have checked "32 bit floating point" as supported output sample format on FFDShow audio decoder configuration.

When that is checked, the output is in MEDIASUBTYPE_IEEE_FLOAT format (if the sound card supports it, I guess). Our converter needs PCM format. So you need to make sure "32 bit floating point" is not checked. To access FFDShow configuration, you can either do a Start -> All Programs -> FFDShow -> Audio decoder configuration, or you can right-click the FFDShow icon in the notification tray when you play something, and choose "FFDShow audio decoder".

As an aside, I found out "32 bit integer" for output format is not good on my machine. Extremely distorted sound comes out of my speakers. So one should only check "16 bit integer" and "24 bit integer" normally (unless you know that your computer can handle other formats).

Upon reinstalling the newer version of ffdshow, I checked a box that said "reset all ffdshow settings". 
32-bit floating point is currently not checked.

Again, all seems to be working now since reinstalling ffdshow.
Don't know if it was a setting that was reset or a bug in that particular earlier build.  Either case, me happy!
