AUDIO turns off when I try to play some audio files.  I get a short burst of "static" and then the audio becomes silent for any audio file in any program including the operating system.

I have tried just about everything but it seems the ONLY way to get sound back is to REBOOT the system.

These audio files are in the Program Files\Microsoft Office\media\CntCD1\Sounds

Some files play, other zap the audio.  Try files  aahhml04.wav  or ACCLRT05.wav ..

WMP plays these files without a problem.

I hope I have given enough info to track down the problem.

This sounds like a driver issue.  Try updating.

You could also switch between DirectSound / WaveOut to see if it makes a difference.

I was having a similar problem and it was the AC3 driver messing things up.  Try removing it...

Yep, I've had older versions of AC3Filter cause this too (though usually only when playing video files).  If you have it, I'd dump it and use FFDSHOW instead.  Search the forum for some of my posts on FFDSHOW for a link to download it and other information.
